| Know Your Neighbor: Highland Fire, EMS Chief Brian Wilson Though having never strayed far from his original full time job, Highland Fire Department and EMS Chief Brian Wilson gathered a plethora of associated experiences which can only compliment his current position and ability to serve well. While a junior high student, Brian and his family relocated to Northern Chicago and he attended North Chicago Community High School, where he excelled in math and history; he graduated in 1976. Prior to this and while a senior, Brian earned a little money while working part time as a gas station attendant for the owner, Larry Bridges, who was also a fireman. Bridges was observing his young protégé begin associating with some unsavory fellows and one day invited him to join him for a weekly training session of firefighters. Brian agreed to accompany Bridges. "Well, that was it for me," said Brian. "They welcomed me and included me even though I was only 17 years old. I then had a goal and decided I would achieve it." BELLEVILLE NEWS-DEMOCRAT Firefighters rescue pets from blaze that displaced family in South Peoria Firefighters rescued three pets from a fire that displaced a family in South Peoria early Friday. At 1:25 a.m., the Peoria Fire Department was summoned to 2011 W. Malone Ave. regarding a smoky structure. Crews arrived find heavy smoke spewing from the eaves of the single-story residence, the department said. Meantime, the home's three occupants exited the residence, saying no one else was inside. However, they said, two cats and two dogs remained inside. In fighting the blaze, firefighters encountered "high heat and heavy smoke," the department said. The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes. One cat and two dogs were rescued. The other cat was not located anywhere, the department said. PEORIA JOURNAL STAR Police: Man barricaded self in Jacksonville apartment, started fire A man who police said barricaded himself in a Jacksonville apartment Thursday and started a fire is in custody. Officers said they responded at 5:29 p.m. to 301 W. Beecher Ave. after receiving a report of someone throwing items from an apartment building window. Police arrived and found evidence that items had been thrown from an apartment. Crews made contact with 23-year-old Zachary D. Formanek, who was in a 7th floor apartment at Beecher Hi-Rise. Police said he yelled to them that he had barricaded the door and had started a fire. Police smelled smoke and tried to enter. Officers said they opened the door wide enough to see the apartment was filling with smoke, then ordered the suspect to open the door. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Driver climbs out sunroof before vehicle bursts into flames in Central Peoria A driver climbed out her sunroof before her wrecked vehicle burst into flames Thursday morning. At 8:24 a.m., the Peoria Fire Department was called regarding a vehicle fire at the War Memorial Drive exit from westbound Interstate 74. Crews arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames in a wooded ravine off the interstate. The vehicle had veered off the road and hit an Illinois Department of Transportation electrical box before coming to a stop. "The female driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate from the vehicle through the sunroof," said Battalion Chief Mike Hughes. The driver was able to flee the vehicle before it became engulfed in fire. There were no other occupants. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. The motorist was taken to a local hospital. | Apartment building partially collapses as firefighters battle blaze in Maryland; Firefighter injured PHOTOS: A garden style apartment building on Spa Road partially collapsed on firefighters Thursday afternoon in Annapolis as they were battling a blaze that had enveloped all three floors, city fire officials said. One Anne Arundel County firefighter was injured in the fire, Capt. Aaron Edwards, fire department spokesperson, told The Capital. He sustained injuries that weren't life-threatening and was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center for further treatment. When firefighters arrived on scene in the 1000 block of Spa Road "heavy dark brown smoke" was billowing from the 12-apartment building, Edwards said. "Within a minute of us getting there, fire was blowing out the third floor," he said. "And by the time we got in (the building), fire was blowing through the roof." Robert Lee Beckner, 36, of Iaeger, is charged with first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree arson, according to a criminal complaint filed in McDowell County Magistrate Court. According to the complaint, Beckner confessed to setting fire to his own home in Iaeger. Beckner was a member of the Iaeger Volunteer Fire Department. Russell Roberson, 42, also a member of the Iaeger department, died as a result of injuries sustained while responding to a second fire in two days at Beckner's home. The Iaeger fire department first responded to the fire at 908 West Virginia Avenue on the morning of Saturday, June 20, according to court documents filed by Justin England, an investigator with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office. BLUEFIELD DAILY TELEGRAPH Remembering the Granite Mountain Hotshots: 7th anniversary ceremony to be different this year Every year on June 30, the mountain community of Yarnell remembers the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who perished in 2013's Yarnell Hill Fire. Last year, the annual service drew nearly 150 people to a memorial park in the center of town. But this year's 7th anniversary remembrance is taking place virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A 15-minute service, filmed in advance at various locations, begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. One aspect that remains the same will be the signature reading of the 19 hotshots' names by Lew and Marcie Theokas, grandparents of 27-year-old Garret Zuppiger, who died in the fire. The service's late-afternoon timing coincides with when the fast-moving blaze overran the hotshots at 4:42 p.m. in a nearby box canyon. All but one crew member died in the fire, which at the time was the deadliest U.S. wildfire in 80 years. Nearly 130 homes were destroyed. THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC Florida firefighter held at gunpoint during check on senior citizen A senior citizen held at gunpoint an Orange County firefighter who'd entered her home to check on her well-being Thursday morning, before releasing him unharmed, according to Fire Rescue spokeswoman Carrie Proudfit. Though shots were fired at first responders during the incident, no one was injured, Proudfit said, adding that the Orange County Sheriff's Office is not currently planning to pursue criminal charges. The Sentinel requested the OCSO report on the shooting as well as additional details from their investigation, but an agency spokesperson declined to comment and the report was not immediately provided. Firefighters responded to the home off Observatory Drive in west Orange County about 10 a.m. Friday because the senior's daughter was concerned about her, after not having been able to get in touch with her for several days, Proudfit said. The daughter told firefighters her mother has a serious medical condition. The home was locked. ORLANDO SENTINEL Union: Entire Nashville Fire Department should get tested for COVID-19 A handful of Nashville Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services employees have tested positive for COVID-19. The president of the International Association of Firefighters has some concerns. "The ideal situation wouldn't be to close a station, if you need to quarantine all personnel from that station, then do it," said Mark Young. Young thinks it would be great to do rapid-result testing for the entire fire department and "and stop the spread." While waiting for test results, he believes firefighters and paramedics who were in contact with the people who are positive should quarantine.
