Two girls killed in Lake County house fire, four adults injured Two girls, ages five and eight, have been killed in a suburban house fire in Lake County, Ingleside fire officials say. Four adults were also injured in the fire and have been transported to the hospital. "When we arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames from the first floor and second floor. The fire started coming out of the attic and roof area as well," said Ingleside Deputy Fire Chief Ed Lescher. "As soon as we arrived on the scene, we realized we had three victims in the front yard." All three victims had smoke inhalation and burn injuries, Lescher said. "We were also advised that there was still another woman inside the house as well as two children still inside the house," said Lescher. When fire officials entered the house, they were able to locate the adult woman. After pulling her out of the house, they went to go back in, when the entire back of the house was engulfed in flames. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Hundreds gather to honor retired Chicago firefighter killed in attempted carjacking Hundreds of people flocked to a South Side popcorn shop where last week a retired Chicago fire lieutenant was gunned down during an attempted carjacking. They came to take part in a memorial and a fundraiser for his family. "Lieutenant Williams was a blessing. He came into our store sometimes twice a week. He was always happy," said popcorn shop owner Barbara Marsh. Marsh says Wiliams was smiling when he left last week. Moments later, he walked into an ambush by four young men trying to steal his car. Shots were exchanged and Williams died on the sidewalk outside the store. On Thursday, hundreds of people came to show their support by buying popcorn with the proceeds going to Williams' family. The line stretched around the corner, through the parking lot and down the block. "Just had to support the family. To lose such a great man, it's really hard," one woman said. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Related: Popcorn fundraiser helps family of slain Chicago firefighter First responders are saying goodbye Thursday to a retired Chicago firefighter, who was killed during an attempted carjacking. A fundraiser has also been announced in his name. Colleagues from the fire and police departments are paying respects to fallen retired CFD Lt. Dwain Williams. Williams, 65, was killed in a carjacking attempt last week. It happened when he was making his regular visit to "Lets Get Poppin" popcorn shop in Morgan Park on the afternoon of Dec. 3. A growing memorial now marks the spot where he was killed. The shop plans to hold a fundraiser Thursday afternoon. Customers are asked to buy a bag of Williams' favorite popcorn for $10 a bag, in which a portion of the proceeds will go to his family. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO San Francisco Firefighters Compete for Best-Decorated Fire House VIDEO: The San Francisco Fire Department is reviving a tradition that began and ended seven decades ago: a competition to determine the best-decorated fire station. The year was 1948 when San Francisco firehouses began a fierce competition to be named the best-decorated fire station. The grand prize was $1,000. They went all out, often covering the entire station with ornaments. The competition lasted three Christmases before a labor dispute ended it. Fast forward to 2020, and the fire department has decided to bring the tradition back, with a little help from a sponsor. "The San Francisco firefighters union — I mean, hats off to them! I could not finish my sentence on my idea before they were, ‘we are in!'" said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, spokesman for the San Francisco Fire Department. Now the grand prize is $3,000. The best-decorated firehouse will donate their winnings to the charity of their choice. The public is invited to check out the decorations from a safe social distance. OZARKS FIRST COVID-19 sparks safety innovations for ambulance and medical transport operations PHOTOS: An evening news broadcast in March sparked an idea for Kolby Kolbet: Could a space-age looking helmet used in Europe play a role in reducing coronavirus risk while transporting patients in the U.S.? Months and many hours of testing later, the Sea-Long helmet worn by COVID-19-positive patients is now part of medical transport company Life Link III's standard operating procedure when transporting those requiring oxygen. Kolbet, vice president of clinical services for Life Link III, said he believes the company, with several air bases in Minnesota and Wisconsin, is the first in the country to use the helmets as part of medical transport. He hopes others follow their lead. The helmets not only increased the safety of Life Link III employees by containing respiratory droplets, Kolbet said, but they've also shown improved outcomes for patients during transport. Of more than 30 transports during which the positive pressure helmets were used as of late November, Kolbet said all patients showed improvement in their vitals.
