Warehouse fire rages for several hours in Sauget VIDEO: Hours passed and a warehouse is still on fire in Sauget, Illinois. It appears 5 bays of the warehouse is completely destroyed. Having to smile through the pain is what Amber Scurlock and Anthony Simmons, owners of Pretzel Pretzel, are doing while watching $50,000 worth of their equipment go up in flames. "There were no words," Scurlock said. "I didn't know what to say or what to think. The most important equipment we need to open out business, but that's neither here nor there." The two had plans on opening a second location of their viral pretzel company; that now appears to be on hold. "It was definitely emotional; got a little teary eyed," Simmons said. The raging inferno of a fire started a little after 2 p.m. Thursday in one section of the warehouse and quickly spread. The cause of the fire is still unclear, but thick, black smoke could be seen for miles by Bommarito Automotive SkyFox as firefighters worked tirelessly to control it. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Chicago Firefighters Say Long Wait For COVID-19 Test Results Is Maddening Chicago firefighters say they are having to wait much too long for their COVID-19 test results. The coronavirus has already killed two of their men, and on Thursday night, they told CBS 2's Jermont Terry the wait for results is maddening. The Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 has mandated that all of its members get tested for COVID-19. Firefighters are getting the test – but the results are the problem. The lack of them leave many uneasy and unsafe while inside the firehouses. The men and women of the Chicago Fire Department, of course, have to keep working in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Work, for them, entails 24 hours per shift inside the various fire stations. "Everyone wants to get tested and they're overloading the system," said Jim Tracy, President of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2. Tracy made one thing clear to every member. "Number one, I'm asking them to get tested," he said. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Off-duty Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighter killed in accident at Fox Lake marina An off-duty firefighter from the far northwest suburbs died in a tragic marina accident in Fox Lake Thursday. Police said 46-year-old Mark Amore was operating a small front-loader at the Ben Watts Marina when he went over a seawall. It's not clear how long he was under water. Amore was a firefighter-paramedic with the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Protection District Chief Tom Krueger said in a statement, "We are devastated and heart broken on the loss of our Brother Firefighter Mark Amore who died in non-duty related accident. We are preparing to give him the honor that he deserves and support his family during this tragic time." WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Danville Firefighters Undergo Coronavirus Screening Danville Firefighters are among the first in this region to undergo a recently-approved rapid-testing screening for COVID-19 Coronavirus. Phoenix Paramedic Solutions has been administering the test on-site at Danville's Griffin Street fire station late this week. The test involves a small finger prick for blood, and once it's done the results are known within ten to fifteen minutes. ‘'Onsite screening to determine who actually has COVID-19 takes some of the pressure off hospital emergency rooms and health departments,'' said Nate Metz, president of Phoenix Paramedics Solutions. The tests results also help relieve worries of the firefighters who certainly do not want to take COVID-19 Coronavirus home to their wives, husbands, children, parents and others. WDAN-AM 1490 - VERMILLION COUNTY FIRST Batavia Fire Department receives grant to help fund equipment The Batavia Fire Department has received a federal grant to help fund $262,250 worth of self-contained breathing apparatus and other related items. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will fund $238,409 of the equipment costs, and the rest will be covered by the city, Fire Chief Randy Deicke said. Aldermen on Tuesday expressed support for completing the purchase. "This isn't the first time the city has been the beneficiary of (Deicke) seeking out these (grant) opportunities and allowing us to purchase equipment at a substantial discount," City Administrator Laura Newman said. The new self-contained breathing apparatus, manufactured by Scott, will replace the fire department's existing set that is 13 years old and "very worn," Deicke said. EMS crews get tents to protect from COVID-19 in North Carolina counties VIDEO: The Pasquotank-Camden EMS is taking action to try and better protect its patients and first responders. Previously, it was wrapping one of its ambulances with plastic. Chief Jerry Newell said that unit was designated to pick up possible COVID-19 patients. But then Newell said the department got an idea from Onslow County EMS in North Carolina. They created tents to be used while treating patients in each rescue vehicle. The chief said they went to Lowe's to get the materials, which cost about $70 per tent. He said people came in on their days off to make them for crews out in the field. "Putting the mobile tents on each truck allows us to have every truck serviced for a COVID patient and keep that COVID exposure isolated," said Newell. "When we add this tent to the recipe, risk for exposure becomes even less than minimal because we keep all the exposure inside of the tent." WTKR-TV CBS 3 NORFOLK Disposable N95 Masks Can Be Decontaminated, Researchers Confirm Researchers have confirmed that there are several effective methods for decontaminating the N95 masks worn by health professionals so that they can be used more than once, the National Institutes of Health announced Wednesday. A substantial body of research already showed that the masks, designed for one-time use, can be reused in a crisis. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March authorized reuse because of shortages driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. In recent weeks the Food and Drug Administration has issued emergency approvals for several systems of mask decontamination. None of these rules or methods are intended for the cloth masks recommended or in some locations required for use by everyone in public. The C.D.C. advises regular washing of homemade fabric masks in a washing machine. BUSINESS WIRE Utah passes bill to provide workers' comp to first responders who contract COVID-19 The Utah House of Representatives and Senate both passed a bill during a special legislative session on Thursday that would amend the state's Workers' Compensation Act to include coverage for volunteer first responders and health care providers who contract COVID-19. Under House Bill 3007, sponsored by House Majority Leader Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, it would be presumed that "a first responder who claims to have contracted COVID-19 during the performance of the first responder's duties as a first responder" is eligible for a workers' compensation claim. According to the bill, first responders claiming to have contracted COVID-19 would have to "provide a copy of the positive laboratory test or the written documentation of a physician's diagnosis to the first responder's employer or insurer." The bill passed through the House unanimously on Monday morning and through the Senate later in the evening on a 25-3 vote. DAILY HERALD Ohio hospital chaplain launches text line to thank frontline workers "People used to say, take it one day at a time. Right now, one day is a little long for most of us. One hour is probably a little long. Which is why I say it's one breath at a time." Rebecca Riley Moyer launched the BRAVE text line to send encouraging notes, written by her, straight to your phone every morning. All you have to do is text BRAVE to 484848. This week, FOX19 NOW talked with Moyer about the project. She said what's behind the project is recognizing that we're brave. She referenced a period of time when she was diagnosed with an illness. "When I was going through a period of my illness before I was diagnosed, I didn't feel brave. I felt like I was failing like I was falling apart. It took the rearview mirror that I kept getting up, going to the doctor, I kept looking for answers. And that in itself was very very brave. That's where this all came from.
