Your Wednesday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Jan 12, 2022 | | | | | | Good evening, Ever driven on a co-called Smart motorway? If you have you will understand the terror of thinking you might break down and be left with nowhere to go - and the problem of even getting out of your car safely. Now the Government has admitted that it needs to pause its plans to roll out even more of the motorways up and down the country. While using the hard shoulder as an extra lane definitely improves traffic flow, it has also led to more accidents, and sadly, some fatalities. There are currently 400 miles of Smart motorways in operation and more on the way. And yet, while there is clearly an acceptance that there is an issue with Smart motorways, those which are currently under construction, including one on the M6 near Wigan, will NOT be paused. That seems like an extra-ordinary decision. If the concept of the Smart motorway is flawed, why on earth continue with it? Particularly when there are multiple examples of lives shattered by its impact. Time to think again. Until next time, take care, Gillian Contact me at [email protected] | |
