Who Will Lead American Islam?

with Javad Hashmi

A great number of organizations – traditionalist, modernist, and Islamist – compete to lead the highly disparate American Muslim community. Who is gaining, who is slipping behind? As Middle Eastern influence diminishes, is a new, uniquely American Islam emerging? What is at stake?

Javad Hashmi is director of research and strategic communications at the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC). He specializes in Islamic studies, with a focus on Qur’anic studies, Islamic intellectual history, and religious violence. Mr. Hashmi holds a BA from UC-Berkeley, an MA from Harvard, and is currently a PhD candidate at Harvard.

The Middle East Forum, an activist think tank, deals with the Middle East, Islamism, U.S. foreign policy, and related topics, urging bold measures to protect Americans and their allies. Pursuing its goals via intellectual, operational, and philanthropic means, the Forum recurrently has policy ideas adopted by the U.S. government.
