Your Tuesday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Feb 8, 2022 | | | | | | Good evening, Somehow we seem to have created a society where people think they can say and do whatever they want without consequence. Social media is a breeding ground for those who believe abusing someone is fine from a distance...because there is no physical hurt involved. But they are the first to shout foul when the boot is on the other foot. At that point, they are most likely to try to invoke the ‘hate crime’ offence just because someone is not prepared to sit back and take the abuse and has decided to go head to head with them. This ‘I can say and do what I want’ attitude is permeating almost every aspect of our lives, even amongst those who are supposed to be leading us. There was a time not so long ago when schools had debating societies. Youngsters were encouraged to try to persuade people to their point of view from the quality of their arguments...not by seeing who could shout the loudest and get the most followers on Twitter. Debating societies have almost certainly gone out of fashion with the tech-savvy generation. Perhaps it’s time to bring them back?
