Hurricane Irma makes landfall

Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, made landfall early Wednesday at the far northeastern edge of the Caribbean islands. The National Hurricane Center said the storm is maintaining sustained winds near 185 mph and is heading west-northwest on a path toward Puerto Rico.
