The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Jennifer Wadsworth | Assistant metro editor

The hurricane continued to dominate headlines, with Ida's death toll mounting Wednesday to 26. Most of the fatalities stemmed from the storm's aftermath.

In other recovery-related news:

  • Schools in the capital region are pushing to reopen. In this story, reporters James Finn and Jacqueline DeRobertis have the latest accounting of which campus plans to open when.
  • Insurance companies are supposed to comp Ida evacuees for hotel stays. Our business reporter Kristen Mosbrucker tells us what homeowners need to know about the state rule.
  • We're learning about more and more oil spills in the wake of the hurricane. Here's the latest on that front.

In East Baton Rouge local governance news:

  • The Metro Council OK'd stricter new development rules aimed at curbing future flood risk. Paul Cobler covered the meeting where city-parish leaders took the unanimous vote.

On the COVID front:

  • Louisiana's flagship university says it'll kick out students who fail to comply with its pandemic policy. Caroline Savoie has the scoop.

We also covered the untimely death of Burreaux, a 20-month-old giraffe at the Baton Rouge Zoo who came down with a sudden, inexplicable illness on Tuesday. BREC officials say he then "took a turn for the worse," succumbing to whatever ailed him in the middle of the night Wednesday. Here's what Elyse Carmosino wrote about the death, which came a week after the zoo celebrated the birth of his younger sister.
