| | Advice for the trailblazers When I was a young girl, I took part in my own personal protest against standardized tests. It involved unconventional actions like wetting Scantrons in the school bathroom sink and pulling the fire alarm, which ultimately resulted in supervised probation and expulsion from Baltimore schools — all before the age of 17. As a straight-A student (and sometimes lower grades in math), I was bewildered by the punishment I received for standing up for what I believed in. Over time, I've come to realize the systemic nature of the problems I was fighting against — particularly the excessive disciplinary measures faced by Black girls that often lead to dropouts or even incarceration. This understanding led me to pursue a master's degree in social design, where I honed my teenage potential to creatively solve complex human problems. As a society, we can now recognize the anxiety-inducing and ineffective nature of testing methods like Scantron. I wasn't wrong in my protest, but I lacked the necessary tools and support to express my concerns appropriately. Embarking on a non-traditional path can be intimidating, yet it is often the road less traveled that leads to extraordinary destinations. Trusting the process and embracing your unique journey can unlock incredible opportunities for personal growth. Don't hesitate to challenge societal norms and forge your own path. Remember: True success often lies beyond the confines of conventional routes. Have faith in your abilities, pursue your passions and witness how the unconventional becomes the catalyst for your greatest achievements. — Technical.ly reporter Alanah Nichole Davis ([email protected]) | | | | By Mayor Bowser was one of 20 mayors selected to be a part of the City Data Alliance from Bloomberg Philanthropies.
