For turkey lovers looking to score a deal this season, Meijer says its frozen turkey prices have reached their lowest point in two years. The grocery chain is selling its Meijer brand frozen turkeys at 49 cents per pound, which translates to $6.86 for a 14-pound turkey. Hunters can help slow Michigan’s ‘alarming pace’ of car vs. deer crashes |
Need to know: As the calendar turns to November, the likelihood of car vs. deer crashes in Michigan increases. The Insurance Alliance of Michigan and Michigan United Conservation Clubs reported Wednesday that vehicle crashes involving deer are continuing at an alarming pace, with Michigan averaging more than 360 each day in November. How hunters help: Michigan’s firearm deer season begins today, November 15, which can help with the issue because it minimizes the number of deer in the wild. Michigan’s deer harvest increased by 2% in 2023, with 347,008 deer harvested across all seasons. A proposed ban on research experiments in Michigan that might injure, traumatize or kill dogs and cats has been watered down. After a substitution Wednesday, the proposed legislation would only forbid public institutions from research that could injure, distress or kill dogs, no longer including cats or experiments done by private facilities in the state. |

Michigan set to outlaw open carry of firearms at polling places |
| Banned: Michigan is set to outlaw openly carrying guns at polling places and places where absentee ballots are being counted. The proposed legislation now awaiting Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s signature would also ban people from openly carrying firearms inside city and township clerk’s offices in the days leading up to an election. In legislation: Michigan lawmakers have approved tax breaks for massive water-and-energy hungry facilities that house servers which power the modern Internet. HB 4906 exempts data centers which make at least $250 million in capital investment from sales and uses taxes on equipment through at least 2050. Healthy Michigan Plan: Michigan Democrats are moving ahead with stripping an inactive requirement that able-bodied adults who receive Medicaid must be working. |

Firearm Deer Season Opening Day weather: What will wind do? |
Getting outdoors: Opening day of firearm deer season will have pretty nice weather for hunting. The morning weather will be fairly quiet with light winds, cool temperatures and no precipitation. If wind is your most important weather factor for opening morning, the forecast at 7 a.m. shows a light northwest wind for most areas of Lower Michigan and a light north wind for northeast Lower Michigan. Weekend forecast: The only weather-maker this weekend will be a glancing blow of a weak cold front. This cold front will move across the Upper Peninsula, making the U.P. quite showery and a different weather pattern than Lower Michigan. The cold front will drop a few quick showers into the northern half of Lower Michigan. The southern half of Lower Michigan will have a dry weekend other than a stray 15-minute shower. Staying warm: More overnight shelter is coming to Ypsilanti along with the return of the daytime warming center under agreements approved by City Council Tuesday night. For the first time, there will be overnight shelter seven days a week in the city starting in December, according to Community, Economic Development and Equity Manager Katie Jones. |

After hiring children for ‘dangerous’ jobs, cleaning company fined by feds |
Fined: Absolutely Clean Services, a window cleaning company based in Byron Township, has been fined $29,210 by the U.S. Department of Labor after three children it employed undertook “dangerous tasks” while cleaning windows and gutters and installing Christmas lights. One of the children required surgery after falling off a roof, according to a Labor Department. Shuttering: National retailer Advance Auto Parts announced Thursday it plans to close more than 700 locations in the coming years as the company works to address ongoing financial struggles. Growing: SK Siltron CSS has received a federal loan from the U.S. Department of Energy that will allow it to expand its Bay County operations, adding jobs and growing its facility as the local plant becomes one of the top five global manufacturers of silicon carbide wafers. |

Seeing Santa: Decked Out Detroit’s 1001 Winter Wonders is now open Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from Noon - 4 p.m. through Tuesday, December 24. The free Christmas walkthrough is located on the ground-level of 1001 Woodward Avenue. Just follow the candy cane lane past the igloos and through the life-sized gingerbread house where visitors will find Santa and his elves who will be available for free photos. Start shopping: Tanger Outlets Grand Rapids invites the West Michigan region to share in the spirit of the holiday season this week. For the first time, bustling shoppers can look forward to a new experience: the “Holiday Cheer Tour” from Nov. 14-17. Guests who spot the experiential cheer truck can win prizes, including up to $1,000 per day in athletic and accessory brand gift cards. One of Michigan‘s prettiest winter trail adventures is getting a little extra holiday sparkle this year. The Highlands at Harbor Springs resort is once again lighting up its Enchanted Trail this winter. The Highlands is offering timed tickets for the trail until Feb. 22. This wooded walk is decked out with thousands of twinkling lights and big interactive light displays. |
