Hunter Biden makes surprise appearance at House contempt hearing |
A defiant Hunter Biden made an unexpected appearance on Capitol Hill today, stunning House Republicans as they convened a hearing to consider a resolution on holding President Joe Biden’s son in contempt of Congress. A chaotic scene ensued when the younger Biden walked into the hearing room as opening statements were being made, and took a seat in the front row. “You are the epitome of white privilege, coming into the oversight committee, spitting in our face, ignoring a congressional subpoena to be deposed,” Republican Rep. Nancy Mace said. “What are you afraid of?” she continued. “You have no balls.” Mace went on to say Hunter Biden should be arrested and go "straight to jail." Mace was interrupted by Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz. “If the gentlelady wants to hear from Hunter Biden, we can hear from him right now. Let’s take a vote and hear from Hunter Biden.” The younger Biden refused to comply with a subpoena from the oversight committee to testify behind closed doors last month in their impeachment inquiry into his father, saying he would only testify in public. Republicans have alleged that President Biden benefited financially from his son’s foreign business dealings, but have produced no evidence of wrongdoing or influence peddling by the president. |

New flood rescues and evacuations in Northeast after major storm |
First responders are rescuing people trapped in their homes in New Jersey today, after a massive storm slammed the East Coast with heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds, and knocked out the power to more than half a million homes and businesses. In Connecticut, an evacuation has been ordered in the town of Bozrah and part of Norwich, after a partial dam break this morning. Drone video from New Hampshire shows major flooding along Hampton Beach, with homes surrounded by water. The same, massive storm system produced a tornado outbreak and caused significant damage across the Southeast earlier on Tuesday. One person was killed in North Carolina when a suspected tornado struck a mobile home park near Charlotte. At least four other deaths have been linked to the storm, one in Missouri, two in Alabama, and one in Georgia. As this storm system exits, we’re tracking another cross-country storm threat that’s already bringing blizzard conditions to the Northwest, and could bring a potential “bomb cyclone” blizzard to the Midwest by Friday. In Northern California, crews are searching for anyone who may be trapped after an avalanche struck the Palisades Tahoe Resort. |
Haley and DeSantis to debate in Iowa with five days until caucuses |
Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis will face off on the debate stage in Des Moines this evening, with just five days to go until the Iowa caucuses. Both Haley and DeSantis are trailing in Iowa behind the front-runner, former President Donald Trump, who will hold a competing town hall in Des Moines tonight at the same time as the debate. DeSantis, who has received the endorsement of Iowa’s Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, has gone all-in on the state, saying this week that voters there could “upend” the race. Haley has been looking ahead to the next contest, the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23. She got some good news on Tuesday, when a new poll showed her cutting Trump’s lead in New Hampshire to single digits. Trump has turned his fire on Haley as she has risen in the New Hampshire polls. On Monday, he promoted a baseless “birther” conspiracy about Haley on his social media site. The former president is expected to be in a New York court Thursday for closing arguments in his civil fraud trial, but he has been barred from personally speaking as he had planned, because he did not agree to limitations on what he could say, the judge ruled. |

Boeing CEO acknowledges “mistake” after Alaska Airlines blowout |
Boeing’s CEO said the company made a “mistake” at a staff meeting in the wake of the door plug blowout aboard one of its planes last week. Dave Calhoun said the company is working to assure airlines that its planes are safe, and assisting federal investigators as they search for the cause of the rupture aboard a Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines on Friday. “We’re going to approach this, No. 1, acknowledging our mistake. We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way,” he told employees. The FAA ordered the grounding of dozens of 737 Max 9 planes following the incident, and the aircrafts must be inspected before flying again. Investigators are focusing on the bolts meant to secure the door plug. On Monday, both Alaska Airlines and United Airlines said loose hardware had been found during inspections on their 737 Max 9 planes. |
