Diamond gun ban upheld: Two-time gold medal Olympic shooter Michael Diamond has failed to convince the Civil Administrative tribunal he'd be no threat to public safety if he got his gun licence back. Diamond was given a 10-year ban after he was found guilty of firearms and drink-driving charges in Port Stephens in 2017. In a submission to the tribunal in 2022, the commissioner's representatives stated Diamond had also been involved in a series of domestic incidents. Local wounds research: A Hunter engineering firm is partnering with a local manufacturer and the University of Newcastle to research wounds. The grant will fund industry-led medical research to solve chronic wound problems. Belmont desalination plant: Plans for the Belmont Desalination plant are gaining momentum, with on and offshore investigations underway. Designs have been released and the government says contractors are assessing the seabed for the desalination plant's seawater intake pipeline. Calls for liquor report to be made public: The Lord Mayor of Newcastle says she can't understand why an independent report on the Newcastle lockout trial hasn't been made public. A 12-month trial of liquor licensing laws wrapped up in October, with the trial allowing later closing times and no extra restrictions on alcohol service. The report on the relaxing of trading hours in Newcastle will be assessed by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority. | Visit our website for more local news |
