How broken is your bracket?

Michigan basketball defeated Texas A&M 91-79 on Saturday to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Good thing because Tom Izzo was rooting for them. Here's a first look at Auburn, Michigan’s next opponent.

Last night, Michigan State landed a Sweet 16 spot after their 71-63 win against No. 10 New Mexico at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. Good thing because Dusty May was rooting for them. Here's a first look at Ole Miss, Michigan State's next opponent.

The Spartans may have been out of town, but the Breslin Center wasn't empty. The MHSAA's girls basketball state finals took place over the weekend. Here are the results for Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4.

Hundreds of Michigan clean energy projects wait years to plug in. Most never do

Nationwide and in Michigan, clean power development has exploded, driven by renewables becoming cheaper, governments setting climate goals and power demand rising after years of stagnation, while old coal power plants shut down. But the rush has clogged the system of getting permission to plug into the grid, leaving all sorts of power installations waiting up to five years before being built. Many never are, and experts say the logjam is bad for power bills, reliability and the climate.

More than 1,600 energy projects – the lion’s share solar farms and other low-carbon installations – are lined up to juice the regional grid serving the Midwest and central U.S. Some 240 are in Michigan.

To know: Nearly 2 million Michigan customers who get their power from Consumers Energy will see their electric rates jump in early April.

Inside the manhunt for murderer who killed woman with ‘pure soul’

Ruby Garcia, 25, of Grand Rapids, was killed on March 22, 2024, on U.S. 131 near Leonard Street NW. The manhunt for her killer began soon after her body was discovered. In passing the one-year anniversary of the tragic homicide that grabbed national political attention, MLive is taking a deeper look at the police investigation and the woman whose life ended much too soon.

Sneak peek: A television show trailer has been released to an eight-part series on the inner workings of Grand Rapids police and specific investigations.

More in crime: The parents of a woman found dead in a burned storage unit say a judge showed a “disregard for her life” in dismissing involuntary manslaughter charges against her friend.

Michigan State claims Big Ten Tournament title in double-OT thriller

Champs: Michigan State’s hockey team once again won the Big Ten Tournament in dramatic fashion. After blowing a two-goal lead in the third period, the top-seeded Spartans outlasted No. 3 seed Ohio State 4-3 in double overtime Saturday in front of their home crowd at Munn Ice Arena. Isaac Howard played hero for MSU with a pin-point shot in front with 4:51 remaining in the second overtime, which made Saturday the longest Big Ten Tournament championship in the history of the conference.

What happens in Vegas hopefully stays: The Detroit Red Wings’ fleeting playoff hopes took another blow on Saturday. Tomas Hertl recorded a hat trick, scoring three times before the midway mark of the game, and the Vegas Golden Knights cruised to a 6-3 victory at T-Mobile Arena.

Normally this time of year, we’re checking long-range weather reports to see if the Detroit Tigers will be rained out or snowed out in the first week of the season -- or just figuring out how many layers we’ll need to make it past the first pitch. But the Tigers are not only opening the season on the road this year, they’re doing so in sunny southern California.

If a Great Lake had to be renamed Lake Ohio, MLive readers choose Erie

Poll results: It may or may not have been a joke from Vivek Ramaswamy, but we still wanted to know what you thought. Ramaswamy, who launched his campaign for Ohio governor last month, suggested one of the Great Lakes should be renamed Lake Ohio.

If this absolutely had to happen, we wanted to know which of the five Great Lakes you would be OK with getting a new name. 59% of MLive readers said Lake Erie, an overwhelming number in our poll.

Memorial Day Weekend ski: Skiers may still be carving turns down one of Boyne Mountain’s ski runs in late May if the “glacier” the resort’s snow farmers have spent the winter building lasts as long as they think it might.
