The plane had just leveled out after taking off when one of the engines seized up, and another began smoking badly. Adjusting his parachute, the instructor strove for nonchalance as he made his way to the hatch door. "Now I want you men to keep perfectly calm," he said, "while I go for help." ________________________________________________` ____________________________________________________ If you like the Humor Letter, please vote! Alice Todd, 45, is accused of swapping her child last year for a vehicle provided by Tina Chavis, 47, and her husband Vicenio Romero, 53. All three defendants have been charged with the unlawful sale, surrender, or purchase of a minor. At the time of the baby/vehicle barter, the child was less than a year old, according to court records. A police investigation was launched in late-July when Chavis brought the child to a hospital for treatment. Since the girl was presented to medical staff with bruising, hospital personnel contacted cops and child protective service workers. During subsequent questioning, Chavis initially said she was the child's birth mother. She subsequently changed her story, saying that she had adopted the girl. But Chavis was unable to provide documentation to support that claim. Police in Thomasville, a city 20 miles south of Winston-Salem, eventually identified Todd as the child's biological mother. Superior Court indictments allege that Chavis and Romero transferred possession of a vehicle to Alice Todd for physical custody of the minor. The swap, the indictment adds, was not ordered by a court, authorized by statute, or otherwise lawful. Police said that Todd accepted a 27-year-old Plymouth in return for her child. The girl, now two-years-old, is currently in the custody of a relative. Todd, seen above, and her codefendants are each being held in the Davidson County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. They are scheduled for an October 21 court appearance. DearWebby's Tech Support Pits From: Roselyn Re: What is "War Driving"? I hope you have recovered from your eye injections! My father has to have to get them and he can't drive for a week afterwards. You mentioned "War Driving". Dad said: "Yep, we used to do that before the Internet." but would not tell me details. What's the story? Roselyn Dear Roselyn Once upon a time, long, long ago, before the Internet, when we had BIG, powerful cars. that could haul 8 or more skinny teens, they used to gather as mny garage door openers as they could, set them all to different combinations and start cruising Hamburger Hill and all the affluent neighborhoods, where people had garages and electric garage doors. Then they click all their remote controls and see how many garage doors they could open. The game was not to burglar or steal anything, just to open the garage doors. If they did that at -40, quite likely pipes or goods in the garage froze solid by the time the owner came home. All the "War Drivers" did was open the garage doors, laugh and cruise to the next house. As you can probably imagine, the owners sometimes got very upset. I installed quite a few security systems with one element just watching the garage door. With X-10 systems you can set them to call 3 different phone numbers instead of the SWAT team, because at that time it cost $80 if they had to respond and there was nobody to arrest and haul to jail. Calling the owner with a pre- recorded message was a good solution. Once we got the internet the "war drivers" cruised around with laptops and tried to hack into people's connections and use them to download huge amounts of music, which they usually never listned to. They just bragged how many Gigabytes of music they had downloaded. The same with porno. Not for looking at, just for bragging. Don't use an easy password, that they can guess. "Incorrect" may sound hilarious, but Millions of people use it and it is one off the most popular passwords. You can easily pick or generate a complicated password and write it onto a Post-It note and stick that somewhere, where you can see it. Have FUN! An agitated voice inquired, "Is your husband there?" "Do you require his services as a sheriff or as a vet?" the wife asked. "Both!" was the reply. "We can't get our dog's mouth open, and there's a burglar in it." These deal with a variety of physical and mental health issues. If the seminar lasts beyond the normal lunch hour, we're supposed to get managerial approval to attend. So, last week, this flyer came around: LUNCH AND LEARN SEMINAR: WHO'S CONTROLLING YOUR LIFE? (Get your manager's permission before attending) Looks like that question has been answered. ___________________________________________________ Daily tip from Thriftyfun.com Thriftyfun.com font color="#009990"> Keeping Cool on Hot Days When it's really hot and you don't have air conditioning, try putting together this frugal "swamp cooler". Fill a bowl up with cool water and set it in front of a fan so the fan blows air over the top of the water. Toss some ice cubes in the water occasionally to help keep it cool. thriftyfun.Com Actually, the cooling is done by extracting calories from the air to evaporate the water. Cooling the water is counterproductive. It takes one calorie to increase the temperature by 1 degree, but 650 to evaporate it. If you want to cool down a room fast when you get back from town, hang some wet mesh cloth in front of a fan. Occasionally spray it with a water filled Windex sprayer. You will be very surprised how fast that cools down a room! Have FUN! DearWebby ____________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ A friend and his wife were considering traveling to Alaska for a trip that the husband had long dreamed of taking. He kept talking about how great it would be to stay in a log cabin without electricity, to hunt moose, and drive a dog team instead of a car. "If we decided to live there permanently, away from civilization, what would you miss the most?" he asked his wife. She replied, "You." ___________________________________________________ How do you tell a Communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin. ___________________________________________________ Wanting to lose weight, a woman placed a picture of a shapely, pinup model in her refrigerator to remind her of her goal. The reminder worked like a charm as the woman discovered that she had lost ten pounds in the first month of using this method. The downside to this was that her husband spent so much time going into the fridge to look at the picture that he ended up gaining fifteen pounds! __________________________________________________ Ophelia Dingbatter's NewsNo sermon and not suitable for church, just jokes and fun for grownups.
