Randall Berg, 69, reportedly offered the astonishing explanation and justification after being arrested in Draper, Utah, on Wednesday. Confronted about the huge stash of child abuse material found during a police search, the former Salt Lake City International Airport director of operations described them as classy stuff, and adamantly stated he believed his conduct was legal. Court papers say Berg also showed unwillingness to acknowledge the severity of his actions. During the same interview, Berg allegedly admitted to searching for child sex abuse material since 2001 or 2002, and described the victims depicted in the images as younger teens. Investigators believe that some of the children featured in the illegal material are as young as seven or eight years-old. ABC4 reported how Google had passed on a tip to police that Berg owned an online account that contained multiple abuse images. A subsequent search of that account during the raid on Bergs home yielded 30,000 illegal images, interspersed with images of the alleged pedophile himself, it is claimed. Investigators also checked the recycle bin of Bergs computer, where they are said to have found an additional 20,000 images depicting similar abuse, court papers say. Berg was charged Friday with 25 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, all felonies. He is being held without bail at Salt Lake County Jail. A judge accepted prosecutors warning that Bergs former job at the citys airport means he could have the connections and knowledge to try and flee justice. A second court date for Berg has not yet been set. I guess they are still busy counting images.
