On Saturday, police responded to a call about a homeless man allegedly entering a residence in Crestview without permission, Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office wrote in a statement shared on Facebook. The homeowner told police that the man, named Matthew Morrison, allegedly threw a string of lit firecrackers where a 9-year-old girl was sound asleep, according to the statement. The homeowner explained he then ran Morrison, 44, out of the home with a stick. However, it was too late as fireworks went off in the girl's room, causing her to wake up, Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in the statement. The explosion caused the child to be frightened, cry, and shake. Morrison allegedly admitted to the incident, telling police it was a prank gone wrong, according to the statement. Morrison has since been charged with burglary, child cruelty without great harm and possession of a controlled substance. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said that when Morrison was detained, police allegedly found approximately two grams of methamphetamine in his pants pocket. DearWebby's Tech Support Pits From: Olga Re: Motion activated light switch Dear Webby About twenty years ago you recommended motion activated light switches and hailed the one you got in the coffee nachine corner, so that you don't have to walk down to the far end of the kitchen to turn on the big lights, and again after you refill your cup. At the time I remember I laughed and thought "Poor baby! A bit of walking is good for you!". Well, I finally got my own place, and I went to Home Depot and got one of those motion activated light switches. It works great when I am coming out of the washroom or out of the bedroom, but when I am coming in the front door, it ignores me. If I stand there and windmill my arms, then it works as it should. What is the fix? Thanks Olga Dear Olga They have a fresnel lens in the front. It divides up the infrared light into pie shaped sectors. When you cross from one piece of pie to the next one, then it turns on the radar to double-check and avoid fals alarms from the sun moving behind clouds. When you come out of the bedroom or windmill your arms, sectors are crossed. You can probably even turn on the lights by standing at the far door and jiggling your hypnotizers. Simply move the motion detector into a corner so that even when you come straight in from the front, you are crossing sectors. Have FUN! DearWebby Automatically move ALL your settings and programs. During my Army Reserve unit's annual training at Fort Ord, Calif., our battalion commander was upset that evening chow was late. He called the mess hall, and the mess sergeant explained that because their vehicle broke down, they couldn't deliver the field rations to our bivouac site. The commander immediately yelled to his driver, "Private! Drive to the mess hall and get chow!" The private took off on the 15-minute trip. Over an hour later, we were dismayed to see him return empty-handed. "Private!" demanded the commander. "What about chow?" "It was delicious, sir," replied the driver. "I got there right before the mess hall closed, so I got seconds." We discussed our needs with a young saleswoman. Since it was near closing time, we had to curtail our discussion and made plans to come back the next day to make our final decision. Later that evening, my wife and I were at a restaurant, where the same young lady from the bathroom-supply store was now working a shift as a waitress. As she passed our table, she suddenly recognized us and called to me in a loud voice, "HEY! You're the man who needs a shower!" ___________________________________________________ Daily tip from Thriftyfun.com Thriftyfun.com Stuck Together Postage Stamps Thanks to Noella for this report: Suppose a new student enrolls at your school. So, with tongue firmly in cheek, here are some rules to keep in mind when using the Queen's Engerlish: 1. Verbs has to agree with their subjects. 2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction. 4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat). 6. Always avoid annoying alliteration. 7. Be more or less specific. 8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary. 9. Also, too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies. 10. No sentence fragments. No comma splices, run-ons are bad too. 11. Contractions aren't helpful and shouldn't be used. 12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous. 14. One should never generalize. 15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches. 16. Don't use no double negatives. 17. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 18. One-word sentences? Eliminate. 19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake. 20. The passive voice is to be ignored. 21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas. 22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice. 23. Kill all exclamation points!!!! 24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them. 25. Understatement is probably not the best way to propose earth shattering ideas. 26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed. 27. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." 28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly. 29. Puns are for children, not groan readers. 30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms. 31. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed. 32. Who needs rhetorical questions? 33. Exaggeration is a million times worse than understatement. 34. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out. ___________________________________________________ Today, July 10 in 1609 - The Catholic states in Germany set up a league under the leadership of Maximillian of Bavaria. 1679 The British crown claimed New Hampshire as a royal colony. 1776 The statue of King George III was pulled down in New York City. 1778 In support of the American Revolution, Louis XVI declared war on England. 1821 U.S. troops took possession of Florida.
