HRSA to Commemorate National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: February 7

HIV

HRSAs Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) will commemorate National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) on Wednesday,February 7.

This years theme is Engage, Educate, Empower: Uniting to End HIV/AIDS in Black Communities. NBHAAD is an opportunity to raise awareness about the availability of HIV care and treatment services for Black/African American people, to reduce HIV stigma and HIV-related health disparities, and to encourage those who are undiagnosed to get tested. In the U.S., Black/African American people continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV.

According to the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, in 2019, Black/African American people accounted for 13% of the U.S. population, but 42% of all new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. HRSAs Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) is working to address barriers to HIV care and create supportive communities for Black/African American people with HIV. Nearly 45% of RWHAP clients are Black/African American. In 2022, 87.1% of Black/African American RWHAP clients receiving medical care were virally suppressed, which is a significant increase from 63.3% virally suppressed in 2010. This means they cannot sexually transmit HIV to their partners and can live longer and healthier lives.
