Earnings season rolls on, with more companies reporting yesterday. Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:VRTX) released Q3 results, with a beat on both revenue and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) versus market expectations. |
| Performance of key treatments boosting revenue: Management also boosted its guidance for full-year revenue. Since it was first brought into the Fool universe as a Rule Breakers recommendation in 2005, the stock has beaten the S&P 500 by 3,783%! A mixed bag relative to expectations: "The Monthly Dividend Company," Realty Income (NYSE:O) also raised guidance in its latest results, on investment volume and adjusted funds from operations. Fool analyst Anthony Schiavone highlighted how management "increased its dividend for the 108th consecutive quarter [27 years].” |

DigitalOcean (NYSE:DOCN) and Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) are seeing large swings in their stock price following earnings yesterday. |
| Heavily investing in AI capabilities: DigitalOcean finished down 13.5% even as it delivered a 12% increase in revenue and an 18% jump in adjusted EPS versus the same period last year. The disappointing outlook into the year-end was one contributing factor. High demand for AI software: In pre-market trading, Palantir is up almost 14%. Revenue jumped 30% to $725.5 million, above the $703.7 million analyst consensus. Now trading at more than 100 times future earnings, it’s the most expensive software stock in the market. |

| A final health check on the economy: The Services PMI is forecasted to fall from 54.9 previous to 53.8, but this reading would still be seen as expansionary (above 50). The data is the last major release ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting starting tomorrow. More earnings due Tuesday: Globus Medical (NYSE:GMED) and South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang (NYSE:CPNG) are set to report after the bell, as are Super Micro (NASDAQ:SMCI) among others. |

| Short-term volatility to be expected: The average move in the S&P 500 over the following week is -0.84%. However, when this broadens out to the end of the year, the average gain is 1.54%, according to data from CNBC. The “election is now center stage as the next catalyst for financial markets”: Amy Ho, director of strategic research at JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM), notes uncertainty could persist for several days until the result is confirmed. The year so far, though, has already seen the best first 10 months of a presidential election year since 1936. |
