Download NowThis Week in Washington, D.C.This week, Congress returned after the elections and kicked off an eventful lame duck session. On Wednesday, a bipartisan majority of Senators voted to move forward with the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act” that codifies the right to same-sex marriage. The ERLC strongly opposes this bill and has raised concerns about the significant religious liberty implications. You can read more about why we oppose the bill and what happened here. Also this week, ERLC President Brent Leatherwood visited Washington, DC, to meet with officials across the government to discuss some of the pressing issues our convention of churches cares about. Throughout these conversations with lawmakers he conveyed our opposition to the Respect for Marriage Act and our desire to see Congress instead focus on pro-life protections in the budget and a solution for Dreamers. He also met with the State Department and White House officials to discuss ways we can partner together to advance the cause of human dignity and religious freedom around the world. First, Christians do best when telling the true biblical story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. In this session, the ERLC’s top priorities will be protecting life and religious liberty in appropriations, opposing the Respect for Marriage Act, and advocating for permanent protections for Dreamers and Afghans in the US.
