I remember my first day as a business strategy consultant at the Gallup Organization. I was overwhelmed, frustrated, and confused. My job was to get appointments with C-level leaders in FORTUNE 500 companies and find out if they had any problems we could solve.Â

Most of them had twice the amount of business experience.
Most had advanced business degrees.

I had no authority, believability, or credibility. I was beginning to believe there was no reason for these people to take my calls...

I discovered a system that solved all these problems. This solution was elegant in its simplicity, and it worked like magic.
Here's what I did:
First: I changed my mindset. I did have specific knowledge that the C-level executives needed. This gave me situational authority. I needed to convey that to them. After some trial and error, I found several ways to get them to understand what I had to offer was valuable.Â
But this only got them on the phone.
Next, I had to make them believe that my solution would work. I did this by connecting them with past clients, sharing letters of recommendation, conducting consulting calls, and pointing out problems. I used clients in the same (or similar) industries/businesses as frequently as possible.Â
Finally, for the last set of steps in the process, I would shop their companies (in a retail environment or B2B, this is pretty easy), and I'd make recommendations of things I would change. This research, becoming a customer, and critiquing the process, gave me credibility.
Once I had those three things - Authority, Believability, and Credibility - it was easy to get an appointment and close the deal.Â
You see, the peer-to-peer relationship wasn't as meaningful as my situational authority, believability, and credibility.
