So that’s what happened to my Instagram search engine. I opened the app on my phone last week, tapped on the little magnifying glass, but instead of getting a search field to fill in I got “Ask Meta AI anything.” I wanted to ask what happened to search, but I decided to ignore it instead. Built on Meta’s Llama 3 LLM, the AI helper is apparently rolling out across all the Meta platforms. So far I see it only on my iphone, not desktop or laptop. I decided to ask it some questions. “How much is that doggy in the window?” got me a bunch of Instagram posts, some featuring dogs. Other questions got chatbot-like written responses. Suffice to say, the answer to the question “Who is the most famous person in the world?” would delight soccer fans and upset Swifties. Taylor doesn’t make the top five.
