Burnt out from terminal scrolling, Nik Astashinsky co-founded Unplugged, a mini digital detox to promote phone-free socializing. “I was constantly distracted, tired, and mad at myself and my device,” he says. “When I started talking to friends about what I was going through, I found out I wasn’t alone.”

On Friday night, Asian Roots Collective (formerly the Chinese Canadian Youth Athletic Association) kicked off its annual Celebrity Classic event with a sushi-filled reception at Intuit HQ at the Well. The one-day festival, which features a celebrity basketball game as well as local food and market vendors, celebrates contemporary Asian culture and community. Here, a look at who was there and what went down.

Mayor Olivia Chow is jazzed about the new plan, which aims to reduce costs and speed up approval times. Housing advocates? Not as much. “Toronto is taking a really incremental approach to making it easier to build housing across the city, but we’re the epicentre of Canada’s housing crisis,” says Stephanie Bertolo, a board member with More Neighbours Toronto.
