Treasury removes reporting rule for small businesses

The Treasury Department has removed a reporting requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act that was intended to curb criminal activity through shell companies by requiring small businesses to disclose beneficial ownership. This decision marks a shift in regulatory oversight and has prompted concerns among legal experts about potential increases in money laundering. The revised rule will only apply to about 20,000 entities in its first year.

The officers of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners outlined their 2025 federal priorities, which include a call for Congress to abolish the Treasury Department's Federal Insurance Office. NAIC says the FIO is duplicating regulatory efforts by states, which are the insurance industry's primary regulators. The association also is requesting that lawmakers secure seats for insurance regulators to serve on the Financial Stability Oversight Council in a voting capacity.
