How a monumental day in college football affects LSU

Lincoln Riley said he wasn't going to be the next coach at LSU. But you know, he never said anything about USC.

Riley, a day after denying intense rumors about his connection to the opening in Baton Rouge, left Oklahoma for USC in one of the most high profile moves in college football history.

Coaches don't often leave one blue blood program for another, but after leading Oklahoma to four Big 12 championships and three College Football Playoff appearances since 2017, Riley sent shockwaves throughout the sport Sunday afternoon.

LSU fans surely felt more of a sting from Riley's decision than anyone else outside Norman, Oklahoma. Whether or not it was credible or even possible, plenty of people around LSU thought last week Riley was going to come to LSU.

But he jumped to USC, and as Florida hired Billy Napier away from UL, two of the major openings in college football were filled by Sunday afternoon.

LSU's job, on the other hand, remained open, and now that some of the most popular names in this cycle have fallen off the board, the potential group of candidates has shrunk.

Athletic director Scott Woodward now faces even more pressure to nail the hire that will define his career, our columnist Scott Rabalais wrote. Florida and USC made their moves. LSU has to make its choice.

We'll see what happens in the coming days. The hire could be finalized at any moment. So stick with us!

Until next time,

Wilson Alexander
