This weekend’s British Grand Prix is the guinea pig event for Formula 1’s new sprint format, so how is it going thus far?
After just one hour of practice on Friday, teams and drivers headed into qualifying. Had it been to decide the British GP pole, as usual, Lewis Hamilton snatching it by 0.075s would have been great. The three-part knockout is gripping to watch and is one format that doesn’t need touching.
However, Lewis will now have to win Saturday’s 100km sprint (which is a race, although F1 doesn’t want us to call it that) to officially get that pole position honour and extend his all-time record to 101.
Wouldn’t it have been better to create a new column in the F1 history books for ‘sprint winner’ and have the pole earned in qualifying as before? Otherwise, it just doesn’t sit right with me. |
