State School Board ponders how to analyze avalanche of gender identity feedback
The Utah State School Board released its gender identity guidance document back in January of this year, and Utahns had roughly one month to submit public comments on the guide. When the period for comments was through, the board had received more feedback on a single topic than ever before — to the tune of over 20,000 comments.
The board is now deciding on how to best approach the massive amount of comments, and how the task will be delegated.
"We need to know what people are suggesting and what they're thinking," said Aaron Brough, data and statistics coordinator for the Utah State Board of Education. "This is not typical for us at USBE to have 20,000-plus answers on a survey."
The Utah Legislature had a busy year, and like prior sessions, it is tasked with deciding which of the many hunting, fishing and sportsman-related bills will make it to Gov. Spencer Cox's desk to be signed.
The nine new bills all hunters in Utah should be aware of range from target shooting regulations to fishing and hunting restrictions for nonpayment of child support.
Alex Smith, former Utah and NFL quarterback, is returning to Utah this month to speak at Murray High as part of the ongoing Voices program.
Smith experienced a severe injury during a 2018 game and underwent 17 surgeries to rebuild his broken leg. Despite the challenges, he decided to return to football. Now retired from football, he expresses how the sport got him through that difficult period.
"I can’t tell you what getting tackled that first time and getting up afterward did for me, knowing I’m not fragile and taking that with me," Smith said. "I was so happy to be out there and to be in the moment, playing the game I love.”
