Years ago, I used to swear like a truck driver. But today… “Fiddlesticks” is about the only F-bomb you’ll hear from me.
What changed?
Well, one day I was running intervals in the woods with my old pal Bally the chocolate lab… When a thought hit me like a bolt out of the blue… Mid-sprint I started thinking to myself:
“You know Craig… you’ve got this website, Early to Rise, where you give advice for success and help people live better lives… But here you are always cursing and swearing… even though you never swear in front of your mother… and you never swear on stage.”
That realization proved to me swearing was a choice which I could control.
And I also realized constant pottymouth wasn’t congruent with the type of person I wanted to be.
So, within 4 days… I quit swearing.
Permanently.
How?
By developing what I call “identity integrity”.
I learned this from my friend Sharran Srivatsaa — who embodies this concept perfectly. Sharran is super disciplined and super successful, I mean the guy scaled a real estate company by 10X to $3.4 billion.
Yet he also spends loads of time with his wife and 2 kids…
…And doesn’t even work that many hours per week.
Because he focuses on having identity integrity.
Here’s how Sharran explains it:
“The goal of discipline is to eliminate the gap between what you say you want to accomplish, and how you actually show up in life.”
For example…
Have you ever set your alarm for early the next day…
Only to wake up so tired you immediately hit snooze?
Well if you tell yourself you’ll wake up at 6am — but instead you sleep in…
You’re leaving a big gap between what you say vs how you show up.
Not only are you losing those minutes spent “snoozing” (which isn’t even sleep)...
You erode your confidence every time you break a promise to yourself.
Because your actions are incongruent with the identity of who you want to be.
It’s the same thing when you say you’ll go to the gym after work or fix something in your business — but you don’t.
You lose out on the benefits to your health and income…
And you lose faith in yourself.
But I have great news…
The opposite is also true.
When you consistently make and keep promises to yourself it will send your confidence through the roof.
You learn you can count on yourself…
Because you’re taking the right actions to be the kind of person you want to be.
What promises do YOU want to make to yourself and keep?
Mine was not swearing but yours can be anything.
Maybe it’s a promise not to hit snooze…
Maybe it’s a promise to workout for 30 minutes 4x per week…
Or maybe it’s a promise to be more available for your partner or kids…
But whatever it is, mean it… and FOLLOW THROUGH.
There's no better feeling than saying:
"Holy [four letter word]! I DID IT!!"
When you do, you’ll feel that confidence build up… and it’ll build up even more the next day when you do it again.
Every day it’s just making and keeping promises to yourself…
Some days they’ll be easy… other days you’ll challenge yourself.
But every time you do this, your confidence and success will grow and compound…
Because you’re building identity integrity.
I want to give you all the tools and shortcuts to achieve identity integrity in your own life…
And show you how to keep your promises easily and automatically.
