The Current + iPhone tariffs, robodog scams, crypto win, new fighter jets and keyboard shortcuts cause you love âem - In partnership with NetSuite | đȘ Itâs Memorial Day, friend. Letâs all remember the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice. May their courage never be forgotten. đđ» Hereâs some military tech trivia for you: Which major innovation was originally developed for military use during wartime before becoming part of our everyday lives? A) Wi-Fi, B) GPS, C) Microwave ovens, or D) All of the above. The answer is waiting for you at the end! đ Donât let Big Tech decide: I switched email providers, and now your inbox might send me to the void. (Itâs free!) | TODAY'S DEEP DIVE Remember our heroes Image: ChatGPT If youâve ever lost someone who served, or even just want to understand your family better, listen to this. I was poking around online, and I found my dadâs actual WWII draft card application. His name, his handwriting, his signature, where he lived. It was all there. I didnât expect to get so emotional, but wow. I remember him telling me a few stories. In the Korean War, he put up radio towers. I always found that ironic. đ Get official military records and medals You can request service records, replacement medals, even discharge papers (the famous DD-214) from the National Archives. Itâs free. You just need the personâs name, service branch and birth/death dates if you have them. Dig up old draft cards and enlistment records. Itâs hard to beat Fold3 (offers a free seven-day trial). It has a massive military record collection, including digitized WWII draft cards like the one I found. You could also try FamilySearch (totally free). đșđž This Memorial Day, help a veteran We honor the fallen on Memorial Day, but itâs also a chance to make sure the veterans still with us arenât forgotten. If someone in your life served, ask them to talk. Their stories matter. One of my favorite projects is StoryCorpsâ Military Voices. They record and preserve veteransâ memories for future generations. The Veterans History Project from the Library of Congress also makes it easy to submit interviews, photos and memoirs. Many local VA hospitals offer writing or oral history workshops, and even your local American Legion or VFW may help document life stories. I canât tell you how cool it is to find that piece of someoneâs story and hold it in your hands. Someone who stood in line, filled out forms like we do ⊠then shipped off into history. Memorial Day isnât about sales or hot dogs. Itâs about remembering and sometimes, rediscovering. If you find something amazing, Iâd love to hear about it. Know someone who needs this info? WEB WATERCOOLER đ± iPhone tariff: About 60% of Americans use an iPhone, so weâre talking big money.Trump just threatened a 25% tariff on iPhones not made in the U.S. He says Tim Cookâs too cozy with India and Appleâs been Asia-based for decades. Its factories are basically tech cities. Wall Street winced; Apple stock dipped 3.9%. Crypto brain drain: Glen Fishman thought he was talking to legit Coinbase support. Turns out, it was a scammer who yoinked his password and stole his crypto fortune. FBI clawed back $95K (truly a miracle), but the rest? Poof. Fishman says he may have to delay retirement. Reminder: Never trust a dude whose support ticket opens with âHey boss.â đ€ Fake dog alert: Those viral ads slinging âmilitary-grade robot dogsâ for $49? Total scam. Theyâre Frankensteining DARPA clips, festive music and lies at scale. YouTubers are debunking it so you donât spend your rent money on a vibrating Furby with one wheel. And yeah, TikTok is letting it happen anyway. Get your info removed from the internet: Data brokers sell your info all the time without your knowledge. Next up: Android yelling, âWHO SENT YOU?!â after every reboot. Donât buy drugs online: Investigators found over 200 Spotify podcasts with AI voices or no sound at all. The goal? Get people to click the link in the bio, which led to sites selling sketchy prescription meds like Xanax. They werenât hard to find, either. Some appeared in Spotifyâs Top 50 when you searched drug names. đ Forget the days of finding Dadâs Playboy under the bed: If you have teens, talk to them about this. Teens are romancing bots and AI on apps. Some bots have filters, others barely try. The risk isnât just sexting, itâs warping emotional development in a world where your âgirlfriendâ never says no and always texts back. Speaking of ⊠Years ago, a monk was selling flowers on the Playboy Mansion grounds, and no one but Hef could get him to leave. Turns out, only Hugh would prevent florist friars. In Windows, hit Ctrl + 1 (or 2 or 3 and so on) to go to that tab number. On Mac, itâs Cmd + [number]. To cycle through your open tabs, hit Ctrl + Tab (Windows) or Cmd + Tab (Mac). And one more for the road: Which keystroke combination beat all the rest in the shortcut contest? Win + R! (You can steal that one from me.) |
WHAT THE TECH? | | So the Air Force finally pulled the trigger on the worldâs first sixth-gen fighter, the F-47. Itâs the crown jewel of the Air Forceâs NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) program. This futuristic weapons platform is designed to outmatch China, Russia and anyone else still flying those fifth-gen peasant relics like the F-22. Boeing won the contract, and get this: Itâs faster, stealthier and deadlier than anything before, and hopefully not in the way the doors were flying off the Boeing 737 Max. President Trump called it âinvisible, unstoppable and kinda sexy,â which kind of sounds like the lead in a ghost smut novel. They even built âshedsâ for it. Yes, sheds, because nothing says space-age warfare like rustic barn aesthetics. |
LOGGING OUT ... The answer: D) All of the above. Wi-Fi evolved from radar tech developed during WWII. GPS was created by the U.S. Department of Defense.
