STREETS OF FIRE: Already this year, 26 people have been shot on New Orleans' elevated highways, the most in a decade and part of an alarming trend that police largely blame on random road rage or existing feuds escalating in traffic. We've mapped the hot spots.
END OF THE UPPERLINE: The Upperline opened in 1983 and quickly became a favorite of New Orleanians who treasure its food, its ambiance, its artwork, its off-the-beaten path location and, especially, its proprietor, the delightful JoAnn Clevenger. They've missed it since it closed early in the coronavirus pandemic. Now the 82-year-old restaurateur has decided not to reopen the business, and instead will consider selling it "to someone who is not going to damage what we built here."
SUSPENDING THE SHOTS: The federal appeals court in New Orleans on Saturday temporarily halted the Biden administration's vaccine requirement for businesses with 100 or more workers. The 5th Circuit Court's rulings typically apply only to Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the states within its jurisdiction, but mandate opponent Jeff Landry, the Republican attorney general of Louisiana, said the language employed by the judges gave the decision a national scope.
