Grim search in the swamp, an Entergy shocker, COVID's risk and reward
By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editorSEARCHING THE SWAMP: Ellis Boudean's mother was walking back to her car at Jean Laffite National Historical Park and Preserve when she heard something, turned around and realized the 4-year-old boy was nowhere to be seen. Her 3-year-old was pointing toward the water, however - touching off an around-the-clock search that authorities on Friday said had little hope of finding Ellis alive. SHOCKER: Thousands of New Orleans residents could see a $24 increase on their monthly power bills under a proposal that Entergy New Orleans says is needed to pay for upgrades to electricity and gas systems and to meet renewable energy goals. The utility filed its request Friday with the City Council. RISK AND REWARD: Faced with a startling and preventable new surge in COVID-19, a Louisiana infectious disease doctor offered a stark warning Friday to the millions of Louisiana residents who have opted not to get inoculated: "If you don't choose the vaccine, you're choosing death," said Dr. Catherine O'Neal, chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Good news - If you get vaccinated, you might get some cash. Louisiana announced the first two winners in its vaccine lottery Friday: Clement Dasalla, 80, of New Orleans won $100,000, and Skyla Degrasse, 17, of Hammond won a $100,000 college scholarship.Bad news - COVID is not the only scourge on health these days. Respiratory syncytial virus is surging across Louisiana and other southern states this summer, a surprising development considering that it's actually known as a winter virus that is the leading cause of hospitalization for infants. All this and much more are in today’s Front Page and on NOLA.com. Welcome to the weekend. D.B. |
