In today's newsletter, here’s what Michigan politicians and campaigners say about Trump’s 2024 victory, looking at Michigan's weekend weather, a Mexican national to spend decades in prison for ‘cold-blooded’ murder of girlfriend. |
Counting down until Turkey Day |
There are roughly three weeks to go until shoppers flood grocery stores to grab turkeys, cranberry sauce and all of the other traditional Thanksgiving fixings. Holiday dinner preferences may vary across cultures, but Campbell’s Third Annual State of the Sides Report shows that America's favorite Thanksgiving side dish is stuffing. The report also showed that 56% prefer eating side dishes over turkey and 38% would be happy to fill their plate with only sides. What's Thanksgiving without catching a sports game? For the Detroit Lions fans wanting to see the team face off against the Chicago Bears, here's how you can purchase tickets for the their Thanksgiving Day game at Ford Field. |

Here’s what Michigan politicians, campaigners say about Trump’s 2024 victory |
47th president: Former President Donald Trump won the presidency again — along with Michigan’s 15 electoral college votes — and political supporters and opponents from the state are weighing in on the Republican’s return to power. Michigan politicians and campaign officials, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, have since publicly reacted to Trump’s victory as well. Here is a look at some of those statements. Looking at the numbers: Is Michigan, as a whole, becoming more Republican? Donald Trump did better in 2024 in almost every Michigan county than he did in 2020 — even in ones that overall went to Kamala Harris. According to unofficial voter data from the Michigan Department of State, 75 of Michigan’s 83 counties got redder in 2024. Under investigation: The Michigan Secretary of State is investigating a complaint regarding a text message informing people to vote on Wednesday, Nov. 6. State House Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, R-Jackson, and her campaign sent the message on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The text stated the polls would “open tomorrow,” the day after Election Day, according to a screenshot of the message. |

Drinking too much coffee, soda and juice can raise stroke risk |
In health: Your daily beverage choices may increase your risk for having a stroke. One of the largest international stroke risk studies conducted has found an increased risk for people who regularly drink coffee, fruit juices and fizzy drinks. Researchers behind the “Interstroke” study, which was conducted at the University of Galway in Ireland, published their findings this fall. The details: In 2022, Michigan’s stroke death rate was 57.6 per 100,000 people. That was up from 50 per 100,000 people five years earlier in 2017. Stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off, often resulting in damage to the brain cells. It accounts for 17% of deaths each year in the U.S., and can be caused by a blood clot or bleeding into the brain tissue. In case you missed it: Health officials have identified at least 830 cases of pertussis, also called whooping cough, so far this year, surpassing last year’s total and the annual average of 596 cases from 2017-19. |

Mexican national to spend decades in prison for ‘cold-blooded’ murder of girlfriend |
A convicted killer asked for mercy before he learned his punishment for killing his girlfriend and dumping her body on the side of a highway. Brandon Ortiz-Vite, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to decades in prison on Thursday for shooting his girlfriend, 25-year-old Ruby Garcia, to death. Kay’s Animal Rescue and Rehoming: A self-proclaimed animal rescuer is in court on felony and misdemeanor animal abuse charges after 19 dead animals were found locked up in her Jackson home. Explosives: Pipe bombs were found in a box of items donated Wednesday to a Northern Michigan thrift shop, police said. Around 2:15 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post, the MSP Bomb Squad and a canine team were dispatched to New Beginnings Thrift Shop in Harbor Springs for a report of several pipe bombs being found. |

Michigan’s weekend weather: Better enjoy the first half |
Forecast: Our weekend weather will be split here in Michigan. A storm system moving through Sunday won’t have a heavy rain, but it will bring off-and-on showers to most of us through the daylight hours Sunday. Saturday will be a cool day with morning temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and only warming into the 50s during the afternoon for southern Michigan. Northern Michigan will stay chilly into Saturday afternoon. Severe drought covered 46 percent of Michigan last week and only 21 percent of Michigan this week. Here’s a closer look at the current drought assessment map with the statistics on how much has changed this week. Next week will show a much bigger change in our drought status over much of Michigan. Additional heavy rain in northern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula will continue to eat away at severe and moderate drought areas. Sky watching: If you missed the peak of the Southern Taurids on Tuesday, catch the Northern Taurids zenith on Nov. 12. |
