Back in 2019, I did something dumb… I moved into an apartment high in the sky over downtown Toronto, with beautiful sweeping views of the city. And I also found a new puppy, Daisy, to replace my ol’ dog Bally who had passed away that summer. Both these things would have been great on their own… But unfortunately, a 27th floor high-rise apartment in the busiest part of the city and a new puppy aren’t a great mix. In hindsight that seems obvious… But I was so excited for my new pooch that none of this hit me until after a few ‘midnight runs’ down the elevator and out the door… Then 3 blocks over, to the only patch of grass anywhere near my apartment. With every doggie run outside being such an ordeal… I was forced to become extremely disciplined in planning these excursions and sticking to a schedule. Otherwise my days would have been rife with interruption from bored little Daisy, itching for a walk… Or worse… Needing an emergency bathroom break! I had already been committed to my schedule… But with no one holding me accountable… I’d often get too focused working on one task… letting it overlap into my next work block and throw my day off track. Sometimes I’d even ‘accidentally’ keep grinding past my work cut off time… “Just another half hour” became 2 hours… then before I knew it, it was 10 PM. But Daisy wasn’t gonna let ANY of that nonsense fly. No, oddly enough, adopting a hyper-energetic Yellow Lab helped me become even more productive and make massive progress towards my goals. By upgrading my discipline. Being forced to schedule trips outside with Daisy meant I HAD to stay on track throughout the day. I stuck to my perfect schedule of focused work blocks… broken up with well-timed breaks. Following that schedule to a tee led to huge growth in my business… Brought me better health and less stress… And laid the foundation for the balanced, family-focused life that I’m building with Michelle, our baby girl on the way, and of course… Daisy! That’s why I still follow that strict schedule today… Even though Daisy is no longer a puppy... and we’ve left behind the urban high-rise for our new “jungle house” in Cancun. Thanks to miss Daisy, here’s what my average day looks like today: 4:00 AM - Wake up
4:15 AM - Work Session 1: Immediately attack my #1 priority that will grow my business or move my life ahead
6:00 AM - Meditation, Daisy’s dog walk, and coffee with Michelle
8:00 AM - Work session 2: Usually writing, selling, or BIG thinking about my business 10:30 AM - Early to Rise team meetings & 90 day goals review 11:30 AM - Get a workout in (4 days per week) 12:30 PM - Lunchtime, reading, and planning 2:00 PM - Video content creation & coaching calls 4:00 PM - Wrap up my day with gratitude journaling, brain dump, planning next day, and a second dog walk for Daisy 5:00 PM - Phone OFF and I’m in family mode, present for the people who matter most 8:00 PM - Bedtime! Luckily, Michelle loves early bedtime as much as me Now, if it weren’t for my furry yellow friend, would I still be following a schedule like this? Most likely. But without bumpers and boundaries like the ones Daisy helped create in my life… I might never have had the discipline to stay on track all day every day… OR stick to my work cutoff times.
