Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for April 4, 2023. Here's a question I didn't find myself thinking when I woke up Monday morning: Could the Saints wind up selecting a quarterback in the first round of this year's draft? It still doesn't feel super likely, given the fact that the team just signed Derek Carr to a huge free agent contract last month. But then there was this little piece of news that broke Monday: The Saints will host Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker on a pre-draft visit today. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean the Saints are thinking about drafting Hooker — sometimes these visits are just so New Orleans can get a file started on a player that they can re-visit if that player ever becomes available. But it's still interesting, and Hooker is an interesting prospect. Here's what else we've got today: We caught up with several Saints coaches and front office executives recently to chat about left tackle Trevor Penning, and here's the gist of what they said: Penning has the potential to be a monster, as long as he stays healthy. Linebacker Andrew Dowell has played a small but meaningful role for the last two years with the Saints, and he'll be back in 2023 after signing a new deal Monday. That's it for now, but be on the lookout for some draft coverage from the Times-Picayune's Saints team in the coming days. Cheers, Luke Johnson |
