New conference aims to provide academic look at automotive preservation Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photos by the author. Perhaps one day soon, students in certain post-secondary institutions could pursue advanced degrees in automotive preservation, just as they can now study the historic preservation of buildings and architecture. To pave the way for such a future, the Historic Vehicle Association has partnered with the College of Charleston to present a first-of-its-kind academic conference on automotive preservation. The recently announced conference, "Putting Preservation on the Road: Protecting Our Over... Read On>>
Hemmings Find of the Day - Road Runner foundry casting and prototype model Posted by Daniel Strohl - Whether it was produced for Warner Brothers or for Chrysler (even our resident Mopar expert, Tom DeMauro, can't recall seeing anything like it), these prototype road runner models for sale on Hemmings.com - an actual casting and a Plaster of Paris model from which it was derived - would still make for interesting shelf residents for a Mopar collector. Hopefully the seller has more documentation on their intended use and on their provenance. From the seller's description: These came out of an old foundry in the SE U...Read On>>

Raiding the kitchen and bathroom cabinets for no-buck and low-buck garage helpers Posted by Thomas A. DeMauro - Here are a few examples of items normally used in the kitchen or bathroom that can help make projects in the garage easier. Photos by author. Areas like the garage, workshop and basement are sometimes treated as the second-class rooms of the home. They get the hand-me-downs. For example, your basement may be furnished with the old living room set, the TV that you recently replaced and, possibly, even the old refrigerator. When it comes to working in the garage, even though we like to take pride in our tools, a...Read On>>
Standards of the Whirled - Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, Cadillac Seville Posted by Jeff Koch - International-sized, they called it. The popular term in the press was "downsizing" some four decades back--but that made things sound small and cheap, terms that Detroit was keen on downplaying. Some tried to make it sound less austere and called it "right-sizing": Size it like the European competition, square off the styling, load in the luxury and features previously seen only in larger top-of-the-line models, and voilà! International-sized cars suggested a better-engineered ideal, offering all of the comfort...Read On>>
Harlem, New York, 1970s Posted by Daniel Strohl - Thanks to Mark Peter Drolet on Tumblr, we came across this Jack Garofolo photo of Harlem in the 1970s, but tracking down the exact location proved a little more difficult. Florsheim Shoes and A.J. Lester were both chains, but after reading up on the history of Freedom National Bank, we were able to zero in on the corner of Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where the bank's facade remains to confirm the location. What do you see here?...Read On>> This Day in Automotive History 3/2/1925: | The Joint Board on Interstate Highways is formed and orders named highways to be replaced with numbered routes. | 3/2/1949: | 1st automatic street light in Connecticut |
