It’s a gas: Antarctic scientists get their kicks with penguins Ever go to the dentist and inhale that weird, sweet-tasting gas that makes you giggle and doze off? That, right there, is nitrous oxide — better known as “laughing gas” and is a natural compound found all over the world. One place, in particular, is actually chock full of it: Antarctica. And believe it or not, it all comes from the droppings of the penguins that live there. In fact, there is so much nitrous oxide in the penguin guano that scientists from the University of Copenhagen have reported secondhand intoxication from too much exposure. Yes, you heard that right — it is entirely possible to get buzzed from the fumes that come from penguin poop. And they said Antarctica was a cold, barren wasteland with nothing to do.
