On Sunday, the Socialist Equality Party in Australia held a powerful rally to demand freedom for journalist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The event was unique and powerful. It attracted hundreds of workers and young people, along with a principled layer of journalists, academics, professional people and artists, committed to the struggle for Assange's release. It was also a clear example of why the WSWS needs the financial support of our readers. Donate to the WSWS! The World Socialist Web Site is at the political centre of the defence of Assange, who has been abandoned by the organizations of the upper middle class, their patrons in the Democratic Party in the US and the Labor Party in Australia, and the establishment media. His defence must be rooted in the working class. As the perspective published yesterday on the WSWS states, "The working class has a vested interest in the existence of a genuine 'fourth estate,' which provides truthful analysis, news and exposures of state propaganda, corruption and abuses. But as there can be no socialism without democracy, there can be no democracy without socialism." The intensification of this campaign requires resources. The organization of demonstrations, the printing of leaflets, travel and promotion in the face of a continuing media blackout--all of this costs money.
