Hospitals in north-west England are “running out of room at the inn”, with patients queueing for places on wards, a frontline doctor has warned.

In the past decade, many of us have joined in with the American-style Hallowe’en celebrations by heading out ‘trick or treating’ with youngsters dressed as ghosts and ghouls. And while we can all dress up still and even head out, we can’t knock on people’s doors this year as we are under Tier 3 government restrictions. I suspect that for some this may be a blessing, but for others it will take away much of the fun of the annual event. At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, when I was young there was no trick or treating. The most fun we managed was attempting to carve a rock-hard turnip and ducking or ‘bobbing’ for apples. You may need to Google that if you are under 30! So perhaps this is the year we decorate our houses, sit in, tell some scary stories, watch a horror film and attempt to get an apple out of a bowl of water without using our hands. It may not sound as much fun as trick or treating, but at least we won’t be spreading the virus! Whatever you are doing, have a great weekend and stay safe.
