Has ICE dysfunction made Utah a sanctuary state for migrants?

Brigham Tomco: "Utah continues to be classified as a sanctuary state by the Center for Immigration Studies. The 'pro-immigrant, low-immigration' think tank cites the absence of ICE detention centers in the state and Utah’s immigrant-friendly policies, like driving privilege cards, child medical insurance, in-state college tuition and occupational licensing for undocumented migrants, as justification for the designation.

"Being a sanctuary state or sanctuary city has traditionally meant having an official policy of limiting 'cooperation with ICE enforcement, especially in relation to the criminal justice system,' said University of Nevada Las Vegas professor Michael Kagan, one of the nation’s leading scholars on immigration law.

"'Utah would never be thought of as a sanctuary state,' Kagan said.

"Utah code explicitly requires state law enforcement to work with ICE officers when apprehending illegal immigrants who have broken the law."

She helped Vaughn Jose find a home — and she’s still going to Disneyland

Lee Benson: "When she was 7, Brooklyn McKenzie diverted funds meant for a trip to Disneyland to help an orphan kid with Down syndrome find a family; 11 years later, they’re going to the Happiest Place on Earth together."

"Adds Brooklyn: 'I think the moral is that little things can make a huge difference, even if it doesn’t happen until 12 years down the road. Little 7-year-old me is happy that everything worked out for Vaughn Jose — and I still get to go to Disneyland!'"
