LATEST: Kool-Aid has an awful aftertaste (by Dominique Olivier) |

|

| "Drinking the Kool-Aid" is one of those terms that has become entrenched in the business world. The origin is rather macabre, to say the least. What can it teach us about charismatic personalities and scammers? |

In Episode 149 of Magic Markets, we worked through the latest numbers and strategic news from Amazon and Alphabet. Alphabet owns Google, so you probably use one of the group's services every day of your life. Amazon is coming to South Africa, so that's of great relevance to all of us as well. Thanks to B2IT, you can get our views on these two important companies. And remember: if you hate it, automate it with B2IT. |

DAILY: TreasuryONE Market Update The dollar is more resilient than an Australian batting line-up, with the market remaining skittish about demand and the spectre of recession. The market has run back to the dollar, with the rand moving back up to the R18.40 level. The good news for South Africans is that the knee-jerk reaction in the oil price last month has subsided. Brent Crude is looking to break below $80 per barrel. There's also bad news for South Africans though, in the form of a significant drop in commodity prices like PGMs. This hits our market severely. It's also worth noting that gold is at $1,961 having lost $40 in the last few days. |

MTN - one for the punters? I've been watching MTN with keen interest, particularly for the market's reaction to the release of group earnings. After dropping to R90 before earnings came out, the share price settled at R95 after the release. You may recall that MTN was over R200 in March 2022. I should also point out that in January 2020 before the world went mad, it traded in the mid-R80s. If you miss going to the theme park and riding the rollercoasters, you could always be an MTN investor instead. For swing traders, MTN offers that delicious ingredient that any trading portfolio needs: volatility. Loads of it. The catalyst for improvement here is for the dollar to calm down and for rates to stop being hiked. This will help the African countries with dollar-denominated debt. It will also give MTN a direct helping hand, as some of its expenditure in Africa is denominated in dollars. Read Ghost Bites this morning and let me know in the comments what your view on MTN is. Are you long, short or indifferent with no position? You can also read about the ongoing excellent growth at Bell Equipment, a cyclical group that continues to trade at a really low trailing Price/Earnings multiple. It's always important to remember that a cyclical company can unwind that multiple at the speed of light if earnings fall away. The good thing about Bell is that it supplies the broader mining industry rather than focusing on one commodity. You'll also find the latest on MiX Telematics, Omnia and Sirius. Happy reading! Find it here>>> |
