Harris says nation must accept election results while urging supporters to keep fighting |
Ending the race: Faced with a sweeping rejection by American voters, Kamala Harris conceded the presidential election to Donald Trump on Wednesday and encouraged supporters to continue fighting for their vision of the country. Before her speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Harris called Trump to congratulate him on his victory. The Democratic vice president said the battle would continue “in the voting booth, in the courts and in the public square.” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a statement said she wished Donald Trump “luck” as he readies for a new 4-year term as president. “The American people have spoken,” Whitmer wrote in a message posted on social media hours after The Associated Press called the presidency in favor of Trump, including in Michigan. Results: Political experts considered the 2024 presidential election season one of the busiest in modern history for Michigan, which played host to about 80 campaign stops featuring the Democratic or Republican frontrunners or their running mates. |

On the other side: Republicans have taken back the Michigan House, ending Democrats’ brief but historic total control of state government. Republicans flipped key seats Tuesday, Nov. 5, and have so far won a four-seat majority, according to the Associated Press. Race update: U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, has narrowly defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, according to The Associated Press. As of 3:12 p.m. on Wednesday, Slotkin had 2.69 million votes, compared with Rogers’ 2.67 million votes. Results: Ballot proposals seeking to expand marijuana commerce across Michigan largely failed on Nov. 5. Among 12 ballot initiatives identified by MLive, eight that sought to expand the number of marijuana licenses failed, three passed and another that would have prohibited all marijuana commerce was rejected. |

Michigan woman charged in high-speed crash that killed ‘brilliant and passionate doctor’ |
On the road: A Michigan woman is facing a second-degree murder charge for allegedly driving at an “extremely high rate of speed” and disregarding a red light, resulting in a car crash that killed a “brilliant and passionate doctor,” according to prosecutors. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 25-year-old from Taylor in the July 19 crash that killed Dr. Ghada Mustapha, 33, of Dearborn. A 40-year-old Kalamazoo man with a history of domestic violence against women has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The case against Stephen Duane Woods reflects an ongoing commitment to protect survivors of domestic violence, U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Also in crime: An attempted robbery on Oakland University's campus Wednesday morning was interrupted by the victim’s roommate, who scared off a group of men. Oakland University Police say a female student was on the second floor of Oakview Hall around 12:30 a.m. when she was approached by a group of five men wearing ski masks. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 1-248-370-3331. |

Spot a bald eagle with a brown head? Here’s what that means |
Mother Nature: If you‘ve ever done a double take and wondered if a bald eagle with a brown head is the same bird, the answer is yes. Brown-headed bald eagles are not in disguise, they’re simply going through puberty. From when they hatch until they are about 5 years old, bald eagles' heads go from brown to splotchy before maturing into the stark white we know as a national emblem. Skywatching: Stargazers have an easy, safe way to wander the nightscape in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This winter, glowing crimson lights will guide visitors on trails at the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, which has park headquarters at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor. Driving by: You can enjoy this holiday event from the comfort of your own vehicle. “Magic of Lights” returns to Pine Knob in Clarkston for its 5th year. The drive-through holiday light display opens on Friday, November 22 and runs through Monday, December 30. “Magic of Lights” features millions of LED lights creating dozens of displays and digital animations. |
