Good morning from Brussels, Just a few days before the US elections (5 November), European capitals are cautiously awaiting the results of an election in which they have no say, but that will undoubtedly have a decisive influence on the future of the old continent. Euractiv’s network and Charles Szumski have gathered the reactions of national leaders, officials, and experts to map out the expectations and anxieties of European capitals in the event of a victory for Republican candidate Donald Trump or Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Amid uncertainty over the US election outcome and the high unpredictability that characterised Trump’s previous administration, it seems EU capitals are currently spending more time visualising a Trump return to power than a Harris victory. The outcome of the US elections will also be crucial for Europe’s eastern Mediterranean, a highly sensitive region considered key for the West’s foreign policy objectives in the Middle East and, to some extent, in Ukraine.
