Dear Recently, I was inspired by a program that helped children who had experienced the traumatic loss of a parent. By creating art in dedication of those no longer in their lives, they were mourning their loss and expressing their pain. I realized then that art is truly the language of our shared humanity. Art crosses politics, gender, race, and economic capacity. It is a mechanism that heals, provides a platform for expression, records history, and tells stories. Art improves academic performance, literacy, and problem-solving skills. This is even more critical for students from lower-income families, who may not be exposed to the same opportunities as their more privileged peers. Art in Action is empowering students to express unique ideas and develop the skills they’ll need for the future through hands-on arts education. Through our lessons, children learn about STEAM, cultural understanding, healing through art, art appreciation, and technique. Join us in our journey to allow every child an opportunity to learn through art. Mizgon Darby Executive Director |

lesson spotlight: alebrijes |
|
Our team spends time with students to keep us connected to why art matters. While testing our new lesson, Alebrijes, inspired by Mexican artist, Pedro Linares, we were once again reminded of how important it is for students to connect to their culture and to be able to express themselves through art. It soon became clear that the children loved the process, the experimentation, and the joy that the lesson elicited. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of mythical creatures. |

why our students love art in action |
|
"I liked making this because it gave us a chance to do something creative and not from our own country. I liked this lesson because it was Mexican and so am I. You let us do things that I never did before." - Rosie, 4th grade student |
