Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
David Fahrenthold

David Fahrenthold is leaving The Washington Post to join The New York Times' Washington bureau as an investigative reporter.

His new role was announced Monday morning by the Times with a celebratory note from their Washington bureau chief Elisabeth Bumiller, lauding his 21-year Post career, including a 2017 Pulitzer for his investigation into former President Donald Trump's charitable foundation and breaking the Access Hollywood tape story in 2016.

Standard stuff for a media company making a marquee hire, but your friendly neighborhood Mediaite newsletter correspondent would like to draw your attention to how the Post reacted.

"Along with his work, we will miss Dave's sharp humor, good cheer and friendship," a staff announcement stated. "We wish him well in his new venture." Fahrenthold was both a "star reporter" and a "newsroom pal," tweeted Post senior Washington correspondent Philip Rucker. "Our pod won't be the same without him."

Professional accomplishments, plus actually being a decent human being? That's a win every day, and we look forward to reading his new work at the Times.

MEDIA LOSER:
Pabst Blue Ribbon's
Social Media Manager

Pabst Blue Ribbon has marked the New Year with a series of NSFW tweets, including kicking off Monday morning by tweeting, “Not drinking this January? Try eating a**!”

That questionable tweet was the culmination of a even-more-questionable marketing campaign PBR unveiled promoting the concept of “Wet January," posting the image above and making a jab at those who attempt to abstain from alcohol during the first month of the new year.

The tweets received some backlash from users who took issue with a beer company making fun of those who do not drink in order to promote their own brand. PBR was undeterred by the pushback and continued on, retweeting both praise and criticisms.

Brands have to walk a challenging tightrope on social media between getting attention and not being offensive, and we all see through the charade of alcohol companies' "Enjoy responsibly!" slogans. But this whole escapade just stinks of desperate attention-seeking, and openly mocking people trying to be responsible about alcohol use is just plain gross.

The A-Block

OK! A new year! Let's do this!

Happy New Year, dear readers. 2020 was a kick in the pants, 2021 didn't offer much relief, and we're more than a little alarmed that "2022" sounds like "2020, too." But we can't let those anxieties get in the way of a good time, so here's a recap of some of the wild, wonderful, and just plain weird festivities as the planet finished another spin around the sun...

CNN's hosting duo Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen shepherded in the New Year in all their usual exuberant and intoxicated glory, starting with a heartfelt tribute to Betty White, the beloved Hollywood icon who sadly passed away on the last day of the year at the age of 99.

Several hours and multiple shots later, Cohen launched into a hilarious rant against outgoing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, yelling "Sayonara, sucka!" as Cooper laughingly held on to Cohen's coat like he was trying to stop his pal from jumping off the podium to go fight the mayor.

Meanwhile in New Orleans, their CNN colleague Don Lemon was also very much not sober, and, well, just watch it for yourself

CNN's producers might have been distracted by their on-air talents' revelry, because the network got trolled by some fake Twitter names during the NYE broadcast, including several that should have been screamingly obvious to anyone who's seen an episode of The Simpsons. Yes, "Ben Dover" and "Hugh Jass" had tweets aired by CNN. We're still chuckling about it.

Miley Cyrus hosted her own bash in Miami with SNL's Pete Davidson, and had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction while performing. Nothing an unbuttoned red jacket couldn't (partially) fix. Davidson performed a funny bit about how we had all had a great year...in 2009.

In Hawaii, video of a stunning fireworks display over the islands went viral, although we're not totally sure it was from this year. Still, New Year's Eve in Hawaii looks amazing.

Florida Man didn't let the occasion go uncelebrated. Early Saturday morning, two pyromaniac idiots lit a Christmas tree on fire in Key West at the Southernmost Point Buoy, taking selfies and then fleeing, leaving the tree to burn a large scorch mark on the landmark. Not cool, dudes. Not cool.

And inaugural poet Amanda Gorman wrote a new poem to kick off 2022, "New Day's Lyric," and posted an Instagram video reading it. It's a lovely sentiment, and we hope that 2022 does indeed find you all well.

'He is no longer a Buc.'

Well, that's one way to make a memorable exit.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown just had a meltdown for the ages, and it was all captured live during the televised broadcast of the Bucs' game against the New York Jets.

During the third quarter, Brown stripped off his uniform before running topless across the field and into the locker room, throwing some of his gear into the stands and waving to the crowd on his way off the field.

Following the game, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians told reporters that Brown is no longer a member of the team.

“He is no longer a Buc. That’s the end of the story,” Arians said. “I’m not talking about him. He’s not part of the Bucs.”

Watch the epic meltdown here.
