Before you get on with your weekend, let's brief you on some of the latest headlines.

Hammond student wins $100K

The pandemic made Hammond High senior Skyla Degrasse want to become a doctor. But steep tuition put med school out of the question — until now.

As one of the first winners of Gov. John Bel Edwards "Shot at a Million" vaccine lottery, Skyla's got a $100,000 scholarship to help realize her ambition.

We called her up the other day to find out how she took the news. Here's her story.

Shooter turns himself in

A man who fatally shot someone early Friday in Baton Rouge hopped in his car, drove around the corner and then called 911 to turn himself in. That's what BRPD told us about the incident, which took place late morning around Fairfields Avenue and North Foster Drive. The gunman claims self defense, but police say an investigation will determine whether he'll face a murder charge.

Reporter Lea Skene filed this dispatch from the scene of the crime.

Live music, comedy

Country, dream pop, a former Idol and more: Check out these 58 shows in Baton Rouge this weekend.

Plus, comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White takes the stage tonight at L’Auberge Event Center. See what else is going on in the next couple days.

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
