Frank Gardner explains what the escalation of the conflict means for the Middle East. After a months-long battle, Alice Cuddy won access to the secretive remote atoll of Diego Garcia - don't miss her report from the island. TOP OF THE AGENDA | What next for Middle East conflict? | | Iran has a whole galaxy of allied heavily-armed militias around the Middle East, the so-called "Axis of Resistance". Credit: EPA | Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Friday marks a major escalation in its conflict with the Lebanese militant group and its backer, Iran. The country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced five days of mourning, saying Nasrallah's blood "will not go unavenged". For Iran, which has yet to retaliate for the July assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, Nasrallah's death represents another blow. As security correspondent Frank Gardner reports, Khamenei has gone into hiding. Despite recording its biggest victory yet against Hezbollah, Israel has continued to strike Lebanon - including, on Monday, Hamas's leader Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin. Israel has also targeted Houthis in Yemen. Its air force said it hit power plants and a port along the Red Sea coastline on Sunday.

| Far-right party FPÖ celebrates victory | | The FPÖ's victory is the latest in a string of successes for radical right-wing parties in Europe. Credit: EPA | Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) has won a parliamentary majority in an unprecedented victory. According to projected results, Herbert Kickl's party received 29.2% of the votes - but whether it can lead a government coalition remains to be seen. |

|
| | The party was founded by former Nazis in the 1950s. Two days before the vote some of its candidates were caught on video singing an SS song at a funeral. As the FPÖ's victory became clear, a small group of protesters appeared outside parliament carrying anti-Nazi banners. Forming a coalition is likely to prove complicated for Kickl, who is a divisive figure. |
