Scientists record new highest-ever average daily temperature for the Gulf of Maine

  • In the latest indicator that climate change is affecting the state of Maine, scientists at Gulf of Maine Research Institute say that Aug. 14 was the hottest day ever recorded for the surface waters of the Gulf of Maine, which is warming faster than 99.9 percent of the world's oceans. Prior to this new record high temperature, the gulf has been experiencing heat waves for the past decade  and has seen some changes to the types and behaviors of fish that can be found in its waters.

  • It has been a challenging six months for Bangor High School seniors James Neel and Jonny Lyon and Brewer High senior Mia Cattan. All three play a spring sport that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then learned last Thursday that their fall sport has been delayed at least until the spring.
New outlier poll gives Sara Gideon and Joe Biden big leads in Maine’s biggest races

  • A new poll released Wednesday showed House Speaker Sara Gideon with a 12-point lead over U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and a bigger Maine lead for presidential candidate Joe Biden in a significant outlier favoring Democrats far more than any other poll this year.
Opponents of CMP corridor proposal launch second referendum attempt to block it
  • Opponents of Central Maine Power’s proposed corridor launched a second referendum bid on Wednesday intended to pressure lawmakers to overturn the $1 billion project, but it could face issues similar to an initial bid struck from the 2020 ballot. The new one would require the Maine Legislature to take a two-thirds vote to approve any transmission lines in the future and require another two-thirds vote to approve the use of public lands for such projects.
Thomaston voters reject plans to develop town green for affordable housing

  • A proposal from Portland-based Avesta Housing to build an apartment building for adults older than 55 was defeated by a vote of 223 to 344. A proposal from Camden-based Coastal Opportunities to build a new home for six of its residents with disabilities was shot down by a vote of 258 to 357.
Westbrook declares state of emergency after landslide blocks Presumpscot River
  • Westbrook has declared a state of emergency due to a landslide discovered shortly before noon on Wednesday that has completely blocked the Presumpscot River downstream from the Sappi mill that threatens downtown Westbrook.
Amid complaints of honking, bikers plan weekend parade to support Searsport facility residents

  • A local motorcycle club will hold a driveby parade this weekend to support residents of an older adult care facility in Searsport that’s been on the receiving end of an orchestra of honks from drivers since the pandemic began in March.

Bangor on track to start new advisory committee for racial equity and inclusion
  • After a summer filled with local and national protests against racism and police violence, Bangor city officials are considering a few different initiatives aimed at addressing racial and other inequities in the city while also building trust with the local police. Among the items under consideration are a possible new advisory committee for diversity, equity and inclusion, and a separate proposal to equip local police with body cameras that will record their interactions with other people.
