The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Jennifer Wadsworth | Assistant metro editor

Good morning. Let's run through some of our latest stories …

Ida's march

The tropical storm that formed Thursday evening is expected to strike the Gulf Coast as a hurricane sometime this weekend. Forecasters say it's the state's biggest weather threat of this hurricane season after a record-breaking 2020 that saw four named storms. Its approach roughly coincides with the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Laura.

We're gearing up to cover its impact over the coming days, so watch this space.

In the meantime, here's a parish-by-parish guide on where to find sandbags.

Shooting victim dies months later

A Baton Rouge man who was shot last fall succumbed to his wounds eight months later, on Thursday.

Robert Jones was 27.

Law of the land

In Livingston Parish, people have been able to build pretty much whatever they want wherever they want. That's about to change, though, after the council took a step Thursday toward putting its first set of land-use laws on the books. James Finn has the story.

Do's and Do-Nuts

A popular donut shop opened a second location in Baton Rouge. Business Editor Timothy Boone tells us where to find the new Shipley's Do-Nut's.

With wild weather on the horizon, we hope you'll check back for our next update. Until then, stay safe, stay dry.
