Growing Peaches from Pits

By gbk

small trees in potIf you are trying to grow peaches from seed the first thing to know is that the new peach may not be the one you started with. The seed will be whatever they grafted to which sometimes is smaller but tasty.

Mr. Red in the Snow (Hummingbird)

By suz1230

A hummingbird at a feeder in the snow.Snow in Las Vegas is so rare. It's fun watching the hummingbirds have so much fun in it. They've never seen or been in it before, so it's quite a treat for them. They're all flying really fluttery enjoying the feel of it too. They're hovering in it, and swooping low to the ground to check it all out and really having a fun time letting the feathery light snow land on them.

A Garden Window

A Garden WindowWhen putting in new windows, think about a "garden window" in the kitchen! We are enjoying springtime in the winter with our new garden window and have enjoyed growing fresh parsley, mint and other seasonings.

Recycled Popcorn Lid as Plant Saucer

By Judy

Recycled Popcorn Lid as Plant SaucerOnce I recycled my popcorn tin as a trash basket, I wondered what I could do with the lid. I decided to use it to catch any water that drained out of my large houseplant. I put some felt furniture protectors on the bottom, so it wouldn't scratch my coffee table.

Using Straw For Low Maintenance Garden

Views of garden with straw mulch. For a low maintenance garden I cover my garden with straw. It keeps the weeds away keeps the soil moist all the time. I grow my potatoes in a pile made from straw. It produced the best ever crop for me last year 2004.

Tiny Vases for Flowers

By Vi Johnson

Bear VaseThis little bear vase was $.25 at a flea market. The least expensive one was $.10. I collect small vases to share flowers from the garden with children to take home to mom or dad. I also use any containers I can find to start cuttings for anyone to take.

Planting In Potting Soil Bags
We found in Mother Earth News how to garden without having to till the soil. We are renting a home and really do not want to put too much work into garden spot. Plant straight into the bags.
Easy Outdoor Bird Feeders and Baths
Clean an empty 2 liter bottle. Replace the cap and cut a hole on the side close to the top. For a feeder, cut a hole on both sides of the bottle. Tie a shoe string around the neck of the bottle and tie on a sturdy branch. Fill the bottle with bird seed, or water for a bath.
Cheap Gifts From Root Cuttings
Root several plant cuttings in soil in empty sour cream or cottage cheese containers, yogurt containers or cut down plastic bottles. Drill or punch a few drainage holes.
3 Month Plan for Starting a Compost Pile From the Bottom Up
A layering method first devised by Sir Albert Howard in 1931 while he was doing studies in India.
Use Distilled Water For Houseplants
Water your houseplants with distilled water. There will be no salt residue on the pots or the plant. Better for the plant and it is cheap.

This Week's Questions
Mamma Duck Won't Sit on Eggs Inside an Enclosure
I had a Muscovy duck lay eggs in my front yard about 2 months ago and they got destroyed by a predator (probably a raccoon). So when I saw the nest getting used again and there were 12 eggs in it with the mother sitting on them, I kept an eye on it. Later 4 of the eggs were eaten. I built a cage around the area using simple strips of wood and chicken wire. But now she won't sit on the nest.

Transplanting an Avocado Tree Grown from a Seed
I live in Michigan and I sprouted a Mexican avocado seed. I planted it in a 16oz. plastic cup. It's about 1' tall and I'm not sure when I should transplant it into a bigger container. It looks really healthy. I will be raising it in my house. So do they like the sun or are they like more shade? I'm feeding it Miracle Gro and it loves it. I have it in my south window.
Caring for Elephant Ears in the Spring
I did not remove my elephant ear bulbs this year, but I am in zone 9. What do I do now? The base of the plant is sticking up quite far and I do not know if I should add more dirt or what?
