| “Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. One hot, sunny day in June, our FCA Huddle in Maryland made our way to Baltimore City to serve others.
Our first stop was The Samaritan Women Institute for Shelter Care, an organization that strives to build a better support system for trafficked women in communities. We had an opportunity to clean the inside and outside of a staff’s house. The job required tons of manual labor, but we found that we received more reward than what we gave. We learned, grew, and made a difference for others.
Next, we stopped at the Park Heights Saints Father’s Day picnic. This was a unique and insightful experience being that most of our Huddle members were from middle-to-high income households and suburban neighborhoods and were mingling with the families and students of low-income, urban neighborhoods. We played catch, ran some football plays, played games with the kids, and met some people whose backgrounds and day-to-day lives were starkly different than ours, which instilled a sense of humbleness in us.
Throughout the entire day, we strived to make ourselves become “rich in good works,” where instead of material or monetary success, we focused on the spiritual success of honoring God by serving others. We became spiritually rich in new experiences and in new relationships. As coaches and athletes, we often attribute being rich to that of monetary values or materials. As Christians, God wants us to think about how we can obtain spiritual richness by following God’s plan and serving others through love and good works like Jesus did. Next time you think about becoming rich or achieving success, reframe your mind and go all in for serving God and His children, which include the people in and around your cities, communities, and schools. |

| Mark Stephens currently serves at the Mid-Atlantic Regional International Coordinator for East Asia. In 1982, he helped to start the first FCA huddle at Salisbury University and has been involved with FCA through coaching and huddles ever since. He has been on FCA Staff for the past 13 years.
