Good morning,

Welcome to your Thursday newsletter from The Scotsman.

The number of people who have lost their lives to drugs since the SNP government was first elected to government could pass the ‘grim milestone’ of 10,000 this week.

In December it was revealed 1,264 Scots had lost their lives to drugs in 2019 – a 6 per cent increase on 2018 and more than double the number of deaths in 2014. The statistics marked Scotland out as the worst country in Europe for drugs deaths. Last year Dani Garavelli explored the effect of our drug death crisis with this powerful column which I urge anyone struggling to comprehend the human cost to read:  One mother's story and the scandal of Scotland's drugs death crisis

In travel news, Fully-vaccinated people people from European Union countries and the United States arriving in Scotland will not have to quarantine from 4am on Monday, the Scottish Government announced today.
